Description and Characteristics

Alstroemeria 'Indian Summer' is a stunning, mid-sized Peruvian lily hybrid known for its fiery orange and golden-yellow flowers that contrast beautifully with its deep bronze-purple foliage. It is part of the Summer Paradise® Series, which is bred for improved hardiness, long flowering, and outstanding garden performance.

This cultivar reaches a height of approximately 60–90 cm and spreads 45–60 cm, forming a robust clump of upright stems and lush foliage. From late spring through to the first autumn frosts, 'Indian Summer' puts on a spectacular display of trumpet-shaped blooms, each streaked with dark markings in the centre, creating a tropical yet elegant look.

Not only is it an excellent choice for beds and borders, but it is also a top-tier cut flower, with long-lasting blooms that can hold in a vase for up to two weeks. Its vivid tones and architectural foliage also make it ideal for showy mixed containers.

  • Striking orange-yellow flowers with burgundy flecks

  • Rich, dark bronze-purple foliage adds year-round contrast

  • Upright, clump-forming habit ideal for borders and large containers

  • Long flowering season: May to October

  • Excellent for pollinators and floristry

  • Hardy to approx. -10°C (USDA Zones 7–10) with mulch in winter

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

‘Indian Summer’ thrives in a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained soil and regular moisture. It is low maintenance once established and performs reliably in a range of garden settings.

  • Sunlight Requirements:

    • Prefers full sun for best flowering and foliage colour

    • Tolerates light afternoon shade, especially in hot regions

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Requires well-drained, fertile soil

    • Avoid heavy clay or consistently wet ground

    • Neutral to slightly acidic pH is preferred

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly during dry periods to maintain even moisture

    • Do not allow the soil to dry out completely, especially in containers

    • Avoid waterlogging, particularly in winter

  • Fertilising:

    • Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring

    • Optional: use a liquid bloom feed every 2–4 weeks during the flowering season

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Pull spent stems from the base rather than cutting to encourage regrowth

    • Remove yellowing leaves and faded blooms to keep the plant tidy

    • Cut back in late autumn after foliage dies down naturally

  • Winter Protection:

    • In Zones 7–8, apply a thick mulch layer in late autumn to insulate the root zone

    • In colder areas, lift and store tubers in dry compost in a frost-free location

    • Containers can be moved to a sheltered, frost-free area or insulated with fleece

Design Uses, Companions, and Cut Flower Benefits

‘Indian Summer’ brings both structure and vibrancy to mixed borders and floral displays. Its exotic colouring and long bloom time make it ideal for dramatic plant combinations and low-maintenance, high-impact gardening.

  • Garden Design Uses:

    • Ideal for mid-border planting, cottage gardens, mixed herbaceous beds, and large patio containers

    • Adds depth and colour contrast to perennial schemes

    • Works beautifully in both modern and tropical-style garden designs

  • Companion Plants:

    • Pairs well with ornamental grasses, rudbeckia, salvia, crocosmia, and echinacea

    • Combines effectively with contrasting foliage such as heuchera or artemisia

    • For containers, use with trailing plants like bidens or calibrachoa

  • Cut Flower Value:

    • Long-lasting blooms—10–14 days in a vase

    • Pull rather than cut stems for longer regrowth and better vase performance

    • Remove lower leaves and use clean water to prevent bacterial growth

  • Pests and Disease Resistance:

    • Generally resistant to deer and rabbits

    • Slugs and aphids may target young shoots; treat early if needed

    • Ensure proper spacing and air circulation to avoid fungal issues like botrytis
