Alstroemeria 'Summer Chic' – Planting & Care Guide
About Alstroemeria 'Summer Chic'
Alstroemeria 'Summer Chic', also known as the Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas, is a compact, long-flowering perennial that produces masses of elegant blooms from early summer until the first frosts. Its striking flowers, often in soft shades of pink, cream or white with contrasting burgundy and yellow markings, are carried on strong upright stems above lush green foliage, creating a colourful display for months.
Growing to approximately 40–60cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, this compact variety is ideal for borders, patio containers and cut flower gardens. The blooms are long-lasting both in the garden and in floral arrangements, often remaining fresh in a vase for up to two weeks. Rich in nectar, the flowers also attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun or partial shade.
- Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds.
- Prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil.
- Improve the soil before planting by adding compost or well-rotted organic matter.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots if necessary.
- Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart to allow for healthy growth and good airflow.
Care & Maintenance
Alstroemeria 'Summer Chic' is a reliable perennial that requires little maintenance once established.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging.
- Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
- Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
- Apply a high-potash liquid feed every few weeks during the flowering season to encourage continuous blooms.
- Refresh mulch each spring to conserve moisture and improve soil quality.
- Remove weeds regularly around the base of the plant.
- Pull spent flower stems gently from the base rather than cutting them, as this encourages fresh flowering shoots.
- Protect emerging spring growth from slugs and snails.
Pruning
Very little pruning is required to keep the plant healthy and flowering well.
- Remove faded flower stems by gently pulling them from the base.
- Trim away damaged or yellowing leaves throughout the growing season.
- Cut back dead foliage in late winter or early spring.
- Divide mature clumps every 4–5 years if they become overcrowded.
- Avoid disturbing established plants unnecessarily, as they flower best when left undisturbed.
