Description and Characteristics

Alstroemeria 'Summer Break'® is a compact, long-blooming variety of Peruvian lily bred for vibrant colour, bushy form, and outstanding garden performance. Part of the Summer Paradise® series—renowned for its enhanced hardiness and floriferous habit—'Summer Break' features soft pink flowers with white centres and delicate darker streaking, adding a romantic and cheerful touch to containers and borders.

This cultivar reaches a height of 30–40 cm and spreads 40–50 cm, forming a dense, clump-forming mound. Its upright, leafy stems support continuous blooms from late spring to the first frosts, making it one of the longest-flowering compact perennials for sunny garden spots or terraces.

Beyond its ornamental value in the garden, 'Summer Break' is a top-tier cut flower known for excellent vase life, often lasting up to 2 weeks when properly conditioned.

  • Soft pink flowers with white and speckled centres

  • Compact, non-invasive and bushy form

  • Blooms from May to October with regular deadheading

  • Excellent for containers, patio borders, and floral arrangements

  • Hardy to around -5°C to -10°C (USDA Zones 7–9) with mulch or winter protection

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Alstroemeria 'Summer Break' is easy to grow and provides months of flowering with basic care. It performs best in well-drained soil, consistent moisture, and a location with good sunlight exposure.

  • Sunlight Requirements:

    • Prefers full sun to partial shade

    • Afternoon shade is beneficial in very hot regions to protect flower colour

  • Soil Requirements:

    • Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil

    • Tolerates loam, sandy loam, or enriched garden soil with good drainage

    • Avoid waterlogged, compacted, or heavy clay soils

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly, especially during dry spells or in containers

    • Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy

    • Reduce watering in late autumn as growth slows

  • Feeding and Fertilisation:

    • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring as growth resumes

    • Optional: boost blooming with a liquid feed every 3–4 weeks in summer

    • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages foliage over flowers

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Pull spent flower stems from the base to encourage more blooms

    • Remove faded leaves to keep the plant neat and healthy

    • Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn in colder zones

  • Winter Protection:

    • In Zones 7 and below, mulch heavily in autumn to protect the crown

    • Alternatively, lift and store tubers in frost-free conditions over winter

    • Container plants should be moved to a sheltered area or cold frame during cold snaps

Design Applications, Companion Plants, and Cut Flower Use

Alstroemeria 'Summer Break' is a garden and container standout, combining showy blooms with compact form and excellent floral performance. Its pastel tones and compact habit make it perfect for both elegant and informal displays.

  • Design Applications:

    • Ideal for containers, raised beds, front-of-border plantings, and urban gardens

    • Excellent choice for balconies, patios, and courtyard designs

    • A top pick for cut flower beds and seasonal colour gardens

  • Companion Plants:

    • Pairs beautifully with compact salvias, nepeta, diascia, heuchera, and ornamental grasses

    • Combines well with silver-foliaged plants like stachys or artemisia for a soft palette

    • Can be underplanted with low-growing or trailing varieties such as bacopa or alyssum

  • Cut Flower Qualities:

    • Excellent vase life—10 to 14 days

    • Best harvested by gently pulling stems from the base to promote rebloom

    • Remove lower leaves before placing in water to maintain water clarity

  • Pest and Disease Considerations:

    • Generally resistant to deer and rabbits

    • Watch for aphids, slugs, or snails on young shoots

    • Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal leaf spot and botrytis
