Alstroemeria 'Summer Sky'® – Planting & Care Guide

About Alstroemeria 'Summer Sky'®

Alstroemeria 'Summer Sky'®, also known as the Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas, is a compact, long-flowering perennial that produces an abundance of elegant white flowers with delicate yellow throats and fine burgundy markings. Flowering continuously from early summer until the first frosts, it brings months of colour to borders, patio containers and cut flower gardens.

Growing to approximately 50–70cm tall with a spread of 40–60cm, this hardy variety forms neat clumps of lush green foliage and produces sturdy stems that are perfect for cutting. The flowers are highly valued in floral arrangements, often lasting up to two weeks in a vase. Loved by bees and other pollinators, 'Summer Sky'® is an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds.
  • Prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil.
  • Improve the soil before planting by adding compost or well-rotted organic matter.
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its pot, taking care not to disturb the roots too much.
  • Position the plant so the crown sits level with the soil surface.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Alstroemeria 'Summer Sky'® is a rewarding perennial that provides months of colour with minimal care.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Feed every spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Apply a high-potash feed every few weeks during the flowering season to encourage continuous blooms.
  • Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and improve soil quality.
  • Remove weeds regularly around the base of the plant.
  • Pull spent flowering stems gently from the base rather than cutting them, as this encourages new shoots and additional flowers.
  • Protect young shoots from slugs and snails in spring.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

  • Remove faded flower stems by gently pulling them from the base.
  • Cut away damaged or yellowing foliage throughout the growing season.
  • Remove dead growth in late winter or early spring before new shoots appear.
  • Divide mature clumps every 4–5 years if they become overcrowded.
  • Avoid disturbing the roots unnecessarily, as Alstroemerias prefer to remain undisturbed once established.
