Overview & Features

• Aquilegia ‘Spring Magic Yellow’ is a compact, early-flowering columbine producing cheerful soft yellow blooms in spring.

• Features elegant, nodding flowers held above delicate, fern-like green foliage.

• Flowers in mid to late spring, often earlier than traditional aquilegia varieties.

• Typically grows to around 30–40 cm in height, making it ideal for the front of borders and containers.

• Forms neat, uniform clumps with good branching.

• Attractive to bees and other pollinators.

• Well suited to cottage gardens, woodland-style planting, and mixed perennial beds.

This variety adds fresh, light tones to spring displays and combines beautifully with blues and purples.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.

• Performs best in light shade in warmer locations to prevent foliage scorch.

• Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

• Avoid areas that remain waterlogged during winter.

• Dig a hole slightly wider and the same depth as the pot.

• Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil surface.

• Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly after planting.

• Space plants approximately 25–30 cm apart to allow airflow and growth.

• Suitable for borders, raised beds, woodland gardens, and patio containers.

Aquilegia thrives in cooler, sheltered positions with consistent soil moisture.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.

• Keep soil evenly moist during active growth and flowering.

• Avoid overwatering, particularly in poorly drained soils.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.

• Alternatively, apply compost or well-rotted organic matter annually.

• Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich fertilisers that encourage leafy growth over blooms.

• Flowering typically occurs in mid to late spring.

• Deadhead spent blooms to extend the flowering period and maintain a tidy appearance.

Consistent moisture and light feeding will support strong spring displays.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Remove faded flower stems after blooming to prevent excessive self-seeding.

• Cut back foliage if it becomes untidy following flowering.

• Allow selected plants to self-seed if a naturalised effect is desired.

• Divide mature clumps every few years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

• Apply mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil structure.

• Generally low maintenance, though monitor foliage for leaf miner damage.

• Foliage dies back in winter and re-emerges in spring.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
