Astilbe japonica 'Deutschland' is an elegant, early-flowering perennial known for its pure white, feathery flower plumes and attractive deep green foliage. This cultivar belongs to the japonica group of astilbes, which are compact and among the earliest to bloom—typically starting in late spring to early summer.

It forms a neat clump with erect flower spikes rising above mounded foliage, bringing brightness to shaded or semi-shaded garden areas. ‘Deutschland’ is especially useful for woodland borders, moist garden beds, and containers, where it creates a soft, refined aesthetic and attracts pollinators.

• Do not allow soil to dry out, as this will cause flower and foliage damage

• Mulch annually in spring with organic mulch to conserve moisture

Feeding

• Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring

• Alternatively, feed with liquid fertiliser every few weeks during active growth

Pruning

• Deadhead spent flowers if desired for tidiness

• Cut back foliage in late autumn or early spring as the plant dies back

• Remove old flower stems and yellowing leaves to maintain appearance

Winter and Long-Term Care

• Fully hardy and can survive harsh winters without protection

• In autumn, allow the foliage to die back naturally, then trim to ground level

• Divide every 3–4 years in early spring to rejuvenate clumps and improve flowering

• Top dress with compost after division for a healthy restart

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
