Overview and Features

An Astilbe Mix includes a variety of shade-loving, moisture-loving perennials known for their feathery, plume-like flowers and lush, fern-like foliage. These plants add elegance, texture, and reliable colour to shady and semi-shady garden areas from late spring to midsummer, depending on variety.

Astilbes in a mixed collection can include different heights, bloom times, and colours—ranging from white and soft pink to vibrant red and lavender-purple. These variations make the mix perfect for layered plantings or mass displays.

• Heights vary from 30 cm (dwarf) to 90 cm+ (tall types)

• Flowering period: Late spring to midsummer

• Hardy perennials ideal for borders, woodland gardens, and pond edges

• Foliage remains attractive throughout the season, often turning bronze in autumn

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Astilbes thrive in moist, humus-rich soils and are well-suited to gardens with partial shade, though many can tolerate more sun with consistent moisture.

• Light Requirements:

  • Prefer partial shade or dappled sunlight

  • Can tolerate full sun in cooler climates with plenty of water

  • Too much shade can reduce flowering

• Soil Preferences:

  • Moist, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or leaf mould

  • Best performance in slightly acidic to neutral pH

  • Avoid dry or chalky soils unless improved with organic matter

• Watering:

  • Keep soil consistently moist, especially during hot weather

  • Do not allow soil to dry out, especially when buds are forming

  • Mulch in spring to help retain moisture

• Feeding:

  • Top dress with compost or slow-release fertiliser in early spring

  • Benefit from liquid feeding during the growing season

• Pruning and Deadheading:

  • No need to deadhead—flowers dry attractively and add texture

  • Cut back spent flower stems in autumn or leave for winter interest

  • Trim foliage in early spring as new growth emerges

• Spacing and Planting:

  • Space 30–60 cm apart depending on variety

  • Best planted in groups of 3 or more for impact

Design Uses and Combinations

Astilbes bring texture, vertical interest, and long-lasting colour to shady and damp areas, making them extremely useful in low-light landscapes.

• Best Uses:

  • Woodland gardens, shady borders, and damp beds

  • Around ponds or streams, or in moist cottage gardens

  • Also suitable for containers in shaded areas

• Companion Plants:

  • Combine with other shade lovers such as:

    • Hosta

    • Ferns

    • Brunnera

    • Heuchera

    • Ligularia

  • Works well in contrast with bold foliage or fine textures

• Pest and Disease Resistance:

  • Generally trouble-free

  • May occasionally get powdery mildew in dry, stagnant air—ensure air circulation

• Hardiness:

  • Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland (RHS H7)

  • Deciduous—dies back in winter and regrows in spring

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
