General Information

Astilbes are hardy perennials native to Asia and North America, bred into many cultivars prized for their colour and adaptability.

• Habit: Clump-forming perennials with upright flower plumes and spreading foliage.

• Height & spread: Depending on the variety, they range from 40cm compact forms to taller types reaching 90–100cm.

• Foliage: Fern-like, finely divided green leaves; many varieties also have bronze or reddish tinges in spring and autumn.

Astilbes are low-maintenance perennials that thrive when given the right soil conditions and a little seasonal care.

Planting

• When to plant: Best in spring or autumn when soil is moist.

• Depth & spacing: Plant crowns at soil level, spacing 40–60cm apart depending on the variety.

• Preparation: Enrich soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting to boost fertility and retain moisture.

Watering & Feeding

• Water regularly, especially during dry spells, as astilbes dislike drying out.

• Mulch annually in spring to conserve soil moisture and add organic matter.

• Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage lush foliage and flowers.

Pruning & Maintenance

• Deadhead faded plumes to tidy the plant, or leave them standing for winter interest – their seed heads add structure and texture.

• Cut back old foliage to ground level in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

• Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.

Protection

• Fully hardy, with no need for winter protection.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
