Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for those difficult, low-light garden spots where few other shrubs perform well.

• Soil Preferences: Adaptable to most soil types—loam, clay, or sandy—provided they are well-drained.

• pH Range: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0–7.5).

• Moisture Needs: Likes evenly moist soil but can tolerate occasional dry periods once established. Avoid planting in waterlogged sites.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn, when soil is still warm and moist, to encourage strong root development before temperature extremes.

• Spacing: Allow 1.2–1.5 metres between plants when creating a hedge or grouping in borders.

• Positioning Tips: Ideal for shaded borders, under trees, or north-facing walls. Also suitable for large containers in sheltered spots.

• Wind Tolerance: Tolerates urban pollution and coastal winds well, but young plants appreciate some shelter from strong, drying winds.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Keep soil consistently moist for the first 1–2 years.

  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, especially in summer.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring or mulch with organic matter to maintain healthy, glossy foliage.

• Pruning:

  • Requires minimal pruning—remove damaged, dead, or overcrowded stems in late winter or early spring.

  • Light shaping after flowering can maintain a tidy form if used as a hedge.

• Mulching: Apply a 5 cm layer of compost, bark, or leaf mould each spring to conserve moisture, improve soil structure, and reduce weed growth—keep mulch away from stems to prevent rot.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free and very low-maintenance. Rarely affected by scale insects or leaf spot; ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal problems.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland. In exposed inland areas, shelter from harsh winds to prevent leaf scorch.

• Propagation: Can be propagated easily from semi-ripe cuttings in summer or hardwood cuttings in winter.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
