Planting Gladiolus Romantic Mixed

  • Plant overview: Gladiolus Romantic Mixed produces elegant, tall flower spikes in soft, romantic shades, making it a popular choice for borders, cutting gardens, and summer floral displays. Grown from corms, these plants add height, colour, and structure to the garden.

  • When to plant:

    • Plant corms from April to May, once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

    • For a longer flowering season, plant in batches every two weeks until early June.

  • Site selection:

    • Choose a sunny, sheltered position for best results.

    • Protection from strong winds helps prevent tall stems from toppling.

  • Soil preparation:

    • Gladioli prefer fertile, well-drained soil.

    • Improve the soil with well-rotted compost or organic matter before planting.

    • Avoid fresh manure, which can encourage soft growth and disease.

  • Planting depth and spacing:

    • Plant corms 10–15cm deep, with the pointed end facing upwards.

    • Space corms 10–15cm apart for borders, or slightly closer for cut-flower production.

  • Container planting:

    • Use deep, heavy containers to provide stability.

    • A loam-based compost with added grit works well.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Water thoroughly after planting and keep soil evenly moist during active growth.

    • During dry spells, regular watering is essential to prevent stress and poor flowering.

  • Feeding:

    • Feed every 2–3 weeks with a high-potassium fertiliser once flower spikes begin to form.

    • Adequate feeding supports tall stems and strong blooms.

  • Staking and support:

    • Most gladioli require support, particularly in open or windy locations.

    • Use canes or plant supports early to avoid damaging roots later.

  • Weed control:

    • Keep planting areas weed-free to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

    • Mulching helps suppress weeds and retain moisture.

  • Pests and diseases:

    • Watch for thrips, which can damage flowers and foliage.

    • Ensure good spacing and air circulation to reduce fungal disease risk.

Flowering, Cutting, and Aftercare

  • Flowering period:

    • Gladiolus Romantic Mixed typically flowers from mid-summer to early autumn, depending on planting time.

    • Successive planting extends the display over several weeks.

  • Cut flower use:

    • Gladioli make excellent cut flowers.

    • Cut stems when the lowest flower bud has just opened, leaving at least four leaves on the plant to feed the corm.

  • After flowering:

    • Remove spent flower spikes once blooming finishes, but leave foliage intact.

    • Allow leaves to die back naturally to strengthen the corm for the following year.

  • Lifting corms:

    • In autumn, once foliage has yellowed, lift corms carefully with a fork.

    • Shake off soil and cut stems back to a few centimetres above the corm.

  • Drying and storage:

    • Dry corms for 2–3 weeks in a warm, airy, frost-free place.

    • Remove old shrivelled corms and store healthy ones in trays or paper bags.

  • Winter storage:

    • Keep stored corms in a cool, dry, frost-free environment over winter.

    • Check periodically and remove any that show signs of rot.

  • Replanting:

    • Replant stored corms the following spring once frost risk has passed.

Gladiolus Romantic Mixed rewards good soil, sun, and support with graceful summer flowers ideal for both garden display and cutting
