Overview & Features

• Berberis thunbergii ‘Green Carpet’ is a low-growing, deciduous shrub valued for its spreading habit and vibrant autumn colour.

• Forms a dense, carpet-like mound of small, bright green leaves.

• Foliage turns striking shades of orange and red in autumn.

• Produces small pale yellow flowers in spring.

• Flowers may be followed by glossy red berries in autumn.

• Typically grows 60–90 cm in height and up to 1.5 metres in spread.

• Ideal for ground cover, slopes, borders, and low-maintenance planting.

• Thorny stems provide additional security value.

This variety is prized for its colourful foliage and wide-spreading growth.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.

• Best autumn colour develops in full sun.

• Tolerates most soil types provided they are well drained.

• Avoid prolonged waterlogged conditions.

• Suitable for exposed and urban gardens.

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and the same depth.

• Plant at the same depth as it was growing in the pot.

• Space plants 75–100 cm apart for effective ground cover.

Berberis ‘Green Carpet’ is hardy and adaptable once established.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

• Once established, plants are drought tolerant.

• Avoid excessive watering, especially in winter.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth.

• Apply compost annually to improve soil structure.

• Flowering typically occurs in mid to late spring.

• Red berries may develop in autumn if flowers are pollinated.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape if required.

• Can be pruned more firmly in late winter to control spread.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
