Description and Characteristics

Buddleja davidii 'Butterfly Candy'® Trio is a vibrant, compact butterfly bush collection featuring three colour-coordinated dwarf cultivars grown together in one pot. Typically combining varieties like ‘Lila Sweetheart’ (lavender), ‘Little Ruby’ (magenta-red), and ‘Pink Delight’ or similar, this trio offers a brilliant mix of flower colours on a single plant base—ideal for eye-catching displays and pollinator attraction.

Like all in the Butterfly Candy® series, these cultivars are bred for compact growth, profuse flowering, and minimal maintenance. The trio blooms continuously from mid-summer into early autumn, producing dense cone-shaped panicles of fragrant flowers that are irresistible to butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.

Each plant in the trio typically grows to a height and spread of 60–80 cm, making it ideal for containers, small borders, balcony gardens, and urban pollinator-friendly spaces. Despite its size, this is a fully hardy deciduous shrub that provides long-lasting seasonal interest and a colourful presence in any sunny location.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

The Buddleja 'Butterfly Candy'® Trio is easy to grow, with low input needed once established. It thrives in sunny, well-drained conditions, and its compact form means no excessive pruning or staking is required.

• Light Requirements:

  • Prefers full sun for best flowering

  • Tolerates light shade, but blooms may be fewer and less vibrant

  • Needs at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for peak performance

• Soil Preferences:

  • Grows in moderately fertile, well-drained soil

  • Tolerant of chalky, sandy, or loamy soils

  • Avoid waterlogged soil, especially in winter

• Watering Needs:

  • Water well during the first growing season

  • Once established, relatively drought-tolerant

  • In containers, water regularly during hot periods

• Feeding:

  • Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring

  • For container plants, feed monthly with a liquid fertiliser during the growing season

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Prune hard in early spring to encourage new growth and flowering

  • Cut stems back to 20–30 cm above the ground

  • Deadhead spent blooms to promote continued flowering

• Winter Care:

  • Hardy in Zones 5–9 (RHS H5)

  • Deciduous—loses leaves in winter and regrows in spring

  • In colder areas, add mulch around the base in autumn to protect roots

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
