Description

Description and Characteristics

Calla 'Kasai'® is an elegant and modern Zantedeschia hybrid, celebrated for its rich purple-black blooms and striking contrast with lush green foliage. The smooth, chalice-shaped spathes emerge in early summer and deepen in colour as they mature, adding depth and drama to garden beds, patio pots, and floral arrangements. The name ‘Kasai’, meaning “fire” in Japanese, is fitting for the intensity and richness of this cultivar’s colour.

Plants typically reach a height of 50–60 cm and a spread of 30–40 cm, forming a neat, upright clump. The arrow-shaped foliage is typically bright green and may be lightly speckled, adding decorative texture even when not in bloom.

Flowering from late spring through summer (generally June to August), 'Kasai'® makes an excellent cut flower thanks to its long-lasting, sturdy stems and dramatic tones. It is well-suited to modern garden designs, exotic-themed displays, and as a patio statement plant.

  • Deep plum to black-purple blooms with smooth, sculptural form

  • Upright, non-spreading habit with elegant green foliage

  • Blooms from early summer to late summer

  • Ideal for containers, borders, and cut flower arrangements

  • Hardy in USDA Zones 8–10; lift and store tubers in colder zones

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Calla 'Kasai'® is easy to grow in sunny, well-drained locations. It performs well in both containers and garden beds, provided that it receives consistent moisture and is protected from frost.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Prefers full sun for best flowering and compact growth

    • Tolerates light shade, especially in hot climates to prevent bloom fading

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Needs moist, well-drained, fertile soil

    • Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) is ideal

    • In containers, use a loam-based compost with added grit for drainage

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly during the growing season—keep soil evenly moist but not soggy

    • Allow surface to dry slightly between waterings

    • Reduce watering after flowering finishes and foliage begins to yellow

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser at planting

    • Boost with a liquid bloom fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during active growth

    • Avoid high-nitrogen feeds that promote foliage over flowers

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Remove spent blooms to encourage further flowering

    • Allow foliage to die back naturally to feed the tubers for next season

  • Winter Care:

    • In Zones 8–10: apply mulch in autumn to protect the crown from light frost

    • In colder climates (Zones 7 and below): lift tubers after first frost

      • Dry for several days, then store in dry compost or vermiculite in a cool, frost-free space (5–10°C)

Garden Design, Companions, and Floral Use

‘Kasai’® adds sophistication to summer displays and works beautifully in monochrome or jewel-toned palettes. Its intense, saturated colour is particularly well-suited for modern, tropical, or high-contrast planting schemes.

  • Garden Design Uses:

    • Ideal for container displays, borders, and cut flower gardens

    • Works as a focal point in summer arrangements or as part of a colour-themed planting

    • Suitable for modern, minimalist, or exotic-style gardens

  • Companion Plants:

    • Pairs well with silver foliage plants (Artemisia, Helichrysum), lime-green tones (Heuchera 'Lime Marmalade', Alchemilla), or airy grasses

    • Combines beautifully with dahlias, cannas, salvias, or verbenas for layered, bold displays

    • In containers, try mixing with trailing calibrachoa or lobelia for colour contrast

  • Cut Flower Qualities:

    • Long vase life: 7–10 days

    • Harvest blooms when spathes are fully coloured but firm

    • Remove lower foliage and use clean water to prevent bacterial issues

  • Pests and Diseases:

    • Generally resistant to pests, but monitor for aphids or spider mites in dry weather

    • Prevent rot by using well-drained soil and avoiding overwatering

    • Good airflow helps avoid fungal issues like botrytis
