Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade or dappled light—ideal under tall deciduous trees or on east/north-facing aspects. Avoid hot afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves and buds.

• Soil Preferences: Requires acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Ideal pH is 5.5–6.5.

• Moisture Needs: Needs consistently moist soil, never waterlogged or completely dry.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring after the last frost, or early autumn while the soil is warm enough to encourage root establishment.

• Spacing: Allow 1.5–2 metres between plants to accommodate its mature spread and promote good airflow.

• Shelter Requirements: Choose a site sheltered from cold, drying winds and avoid locations exposed to early morning winter sun, which can damage frost-covered buds.

• Container Growing: Grows well in large pots using ericaceous compost. Ensure good drainage and re-pot every 3–4 years.

• Companion Planting: Looks beautiful alongside rhododendrons, azaleas, pieris, and other acid-loving plants for layered seasonal displays.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Keep soil evenly moist, especially during the bud-forming period (July–September).

  • Use rainwater wherever possible, as tap water may raise soil pH over time.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a specialist camellia or rhododendron fertilizer in early spring after flowering and again in midsummer.

  • Avoid late-season feeding to prevent frost-sensitive soft growth.

• Pruning:

  • Prune lightly after flowering in spring to maintain shape and remove dead or weak wood.

  • Avoid heavy pruning, as camellias do not respond well to cutting back into old wood.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–7 cm layer of ericaceous compost, pine needles, or leaf mould in spring to help conserve moisture and keep roots cool. Keep mulch away from the main stem.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally healthy but may occasionally be affected by scale insects or aphids—treat promptly if found. Prevent waterlogging to reduce the risk of root rot.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy in most parts of the UK and Ireland; protect young plants or container-grown specimens in extreme frost with horticultural fleece.

• Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to maintain plant health and appearance.

Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses

• Foliage: Glossy, dark green, evergreen leaves provide structure and colour year-round.

• Flowers: Large, formal double blooms with creamy-white petals surrounding a soft primrose-yellow centre. Flowers appear from late winter through mid-spring, brightening the garden when little else is in bloom.

• Fragrance: Light and subtle, adding charm to its elegant appearance.

• Wildlife Benefits: Provides early nectar for pollinators such as bees emerging in spring.

• Ornamental Value: A highly decorative variety, valued for its sophisticated, two-toned flowers that bring a classic touch to shaded gardens.

  • Stunning specimen shrub in lawns, courtyards, or entranceways.

  • Ideal for woodland gardens and partially shaded mixed borders.

  • Perfect for large containers on patios and terraces.

• Growth and Size: Slow-growing evergreen shrub, typically reaching 2–3 metres in height and 1.5–2 metres in spread over many years.

• Longevity: Long-lived when grown in the right conditions, often thriving for decades with minimal intervention.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
