Planting Your Camellia Mix

A Camellia mix brings together evergreen shrubs with glossy foliage and elegant flowers in shades that may include white, pink and red. Depending on the varieties supplied, flowering can occur from autumn through spring. Camellias make attractive specimens for sheltered borders, woodland-style gardens and large containers, where their handsome leaves provide structure throughout the year.

• Choose a position in partial or dappled shade. A site with morning shade is especially helpful because direct early sunlight can damage frozen flower buds by thawing them too quickly.
• Protect the plants from cold, drying winds and intense midday sun. A sheltered position near a wall, fence or taller evergreen planting is often suitable.
• Plant in acidic, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Camellias dislike alkaline or chalky ground because it restricts their ability to absorb essential nutrients.
• Where soil conditions are unsuitable, grow the plants in containers filled with fresh ericaceous compost.
• Water each root ball thoroughly before planting. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root system but no deeper than its existing height.
• Position the plant with the top of the root ball level with, or slightly above, the surrounding soil. Camellias are shallow-rooted and should not be planted deeply.
• Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously. Apply a 5–8 cm layer of leaf mould, composted bark or other acidic organic mulch around the root area.
• Leave enough space between plants for their expected mature sizes. The different varieties in a mix may vary considerably in height, spread and growth rate.

Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Reliable moisture is especially important during establishment and while flower buds are forming. Drought during late summer can reduce the number or quality of flowers produced during the following season.

• Water newly planted camellias regularly throughout their first two growing seasons. Keep the soil evenly moist without leaving it saturated.
• Pay particular attention from July to September, when many spring-flowering varieties develop their new flower buds.
• Use collected rainwater whenever possible. In hard-water areas, repeated use of alkaline tap water can raise the compost’s pH and cause nutrient deficiencies.
• Check container plants frequently during warm, dry or windy weather. Water thoroughly until moisture drains from the bottom, then empty any saucer or decorative outer pot.
• Reduce watering in winter, but do not allow container compost to dry completely. Evergreen foliage continues to lose moisture throughout the year.
• Apply a fertiliser formulated for camellias and other acid-loving plants in spring, immediately after flowering or as active growth begins.
• A second light feed may be given in early summer if necessary. Avoid feeding late in the season because soft new growth may be damaged by frost.
• Renew the organic mulch annually in spring. Keep it clear of the stems and avoid cultivating deeply around the shallow roots.
• Protect container-grown plants during severe frost by insulating the pot and moving it to a sheltered outdoor position.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

Camellias naturally develop attractive frameworks and usually require little pruning. Occasional maintenance helps control their size, remove damage and preserve a balanced shape.

• Prune immediately after flowering, before the next season’s buds begin to develop. The exact timing may vary between plants in a mixed selection.
• Remove dead, damaged, diseased, weak or crossing branches with clean, sharp secateurs. Cut back to a healthy bud or side shoot.
• Shorten unusually long stems to improve the shape, but avoid heavy annual pruning unless rejuvenation is necessary.
• Established plants generally tolerate harder renovation pruning, although flowering may be reduced temporarily while new growth develops.
• Deadheading is optional. Remove fading blooms if they become unsightly, taking care not to damage nearby buds or fresh shoots.
• Brown flower petals can result from frost, heavy rain or camellia flower blight. Remove affected blooms and clear fallen petals from beneath the plants.
• Inspect the foliage for scale insects, aphids and vine weevil damage. Sooty mould may develop where sap-feeding pests produce sticky honeydew.
• Yellow leaves with green veins often indicate that the soil or water is too alkaline. Check the growing conditions and use an appropriate ericaceous feed if required.
• Bud drop may be caused by drought, waterlogging, sudden temperature changes or moving a container after buds have formed.
• Rotate container plants occasionally so all sides receive similar light and develop evenly.
• With acidic soil, consistent moisture, shelter and limited pruning, a Camellia mix will provide glossy evergreen structure and a varied succession of beautiful seasonal flowers

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
