Ceanothus 'Blue Jeans' – Planting & Care Guide
About Ceanothus 'Blue Jeans'
Ceanothus 'Blue Jeans', commonly known as California Lilac, is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its masses of vibrant deep blue flowers that cover the plant in late spring and early summer. The striking blooms contrast beautifully with its glossy, dark green foliage, creating a spectacular display that attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
With a naturally rounded, bushy habit, 'Blue Jeans' typically grows to 1.5–2 metres tall with a similar spread, making it an excellent choice for borders, coastal gardens, informal hedging and feature planting. Its drought tolerance once established and long flowering season make it a reliable, low-maintenance addition to Irish gardens.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering.
- Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
- Suitable for loam, sandy or chalky soils.
- Improve heavy soils with grit or organic matter to enhance drainage.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Position the plant with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a light mulch around the base, keeping it away from the stem.
- Space plants approximately 1.5–2 metres apart.
Care & Maintenance
Ceanothus 'Blue Jeans' is easy to care for once established.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.
- Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
- Avoid overfeeding, as this encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
- Keep the base free from weeds.
- Avoid waterlogged conditions, particularly during winter.
Pruning
Minimal pruning is required.
- Lightly trim immediately after flowering to maintain a compact shape.
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.
- Avoid cutting back into old wood, as regrowth can be slow.
- Remove any frost-damaged growth in spring.
- Regular light pruning encourages a bushy habit and abundant flowering.
