Planting & Positioning

  • Ceanothus thyrsiflorus ‘Repens’ is a low-growing, evergreen shrub valued for its masses of vivid blue flowers in late spring to early summer.

  • Supplied in a 2 litre pot with 3 established canes, it is ready for planting once the risk of severe frost has passed.

  • Choose a position in full sun for the best flowering display. A south- or west-facing aspect is ideal.

  • Plant in well-drained soil, as Ceanothus dislikes heavy, waterlogged ground.

  • If your soil is clay-based, improve drainage by incorporating grit or planting slightly raised.

  • This variety is excellent for ground cover, banks, slopes, or cascading over walls.

  • Dig a hole twice the width of the pot and the same depth.

  • Gently loosen the roots before planting and position the shrub so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil surface.

  • Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle.

  • Apply a light mulch of compost or bark, keeping it clear of the main stems.

Ceanothus ‘Repens’ prefers a sheltered position protected from cold, drying winds, particularly in exposed gardens. Once established, it forms a dense, spreading habit that helps suppress weeds and provides year-round structure.

Watering, Feeding & General Care

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system.

  • Allow the soil surface to dry slightly between watering, avoiding prolonged saturation.

  • Once established, Ceanothus is relatively drought tolerant and requires minimal watering.

  • Avoid overwatering, especially in winter, as excess moisture can damage roots.

  • Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.

  • Alternatively, apply a thin top dressing of compost around the base.

  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

  • Keep the surrounding area weed free to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.

This evergreen shrub maintains attractive glossy green foliage throughout the year. Its cascading branches and vibrant flower clusters make it particularly valuable in smaller gardens or as part of a mixed border.

Pruning, Maintenance & Long-Term Growth

  • Ceanothus ‘Repens’ requires minimal pruning.

  • After flowering, lightly trim back spent blooms and any straggly growth to maintain shape.

  • Avoid cutting back into old, woody stems, as Ceanothus does not regenerate well from hard pruning.

  • Remove any dead or damaged branches in spring once new growth appears.

  • If frost damage occurs, wait until late spring before pruning, as new shoots may emerge lower down.

  • Protect young plants during severe winter weather with horticultural fleece if necessary.

  • Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues.

With proper positioning and well-drained soil, Ceanothus thyrsiflorus ‘Repens’ will reward you with a spectacular blue floral display each year. Its spreading, ground-hugging habit and evergreen foliage make it a reliable and attractive addition to borders, banks, and sunny garden spaces
