Overview & Features

• Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Red Kimono’ is a compact, deciduous flowering quince grown for its vivid spring blooms.

• Produces masses of bright scarlet-red flowers along bare stems in early to mid-spring.

• Flowers appear before or as the foliage emerges, creating a bold seasonal display.

• Blooms are attractive to bees and early pollinators.

• Small, glossy green leaves follow the flowers.

• May produce small, green to yellow quince-like fruits in autumn.

• Forms a dense, spreading shrub with lightly thorny branches.

• Typically grows 1–1.5 metres in height and spread.

This variety is prized for its intense flower colour and early seasonal impact.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.

• Best flowering occurs in a sunny position.

• Prefers well-drained soil but tolerates most soil types.

• Suitable for chalky, loamy, or moderately fertile soils.

• Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and the same depth.

• Plant at the same depth as it was in the container and firm gently.

• Ideal for borders, informal hedging, or training against a wall.

Chaenomeles performs well in sheltered or moderately exposed gardens.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

• Once established, plants are fairly drought tolerant.

• Avoid excessive watering, especially during winter.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support flowering.

• Apply compost annually to improve soil structure.

• Flowering typically occurs from early to mid-spring.

• Fruits may develop in autumn if flowers are pollinated.

Full sun encourages heavier blooming and fruit production.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape.

• Remove a few of the oldest stems at the base to encourage new growth.

• Thin crowded branches to improve airflow.

• Wear gloves when pruning due to thorns.

• Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

• Generally hardy and low maintenance once established.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
