Cherry ‘Morello’ Care Guide
Prunus cerasus ‘Morello’ is a self-fertile sour cherry tree ideal for small to medium gardens. It’s loved for its abundant crops of dark-red cherries, which have a rich, tart flavour perfect for jams, pies, preserves, and liqueurs. More tolerant of shade and cooler conditions than sweet cherries, ‘Morello’ is an easy, reliable fruit tree that also offers attractive blossom in spring and colourful fruit in summer.
Planting & Position
Choosing the right site will help your cherry tree establish and crop well for years to come.
-
Light requirements:
-
Best in full sun, but ‘Morello’ also tolerates partial shade better than sweet cherries.
-
-
Shelter:
-
Prefers a sheltered site, protected from cold, drying winds.
-
Avoid frost pockets where late spring frosts may damage blossom.
-
-
Soil:
-
Thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
-
Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6–7).
-
Avoid shallow, chalky, or waterlogged ground.
-
-
Planting time:
-
Best planted in late autumn to early spring when the tree is dormant and soil is workable.
-
Container-grown trees can be planted year-round if watered well.
-
-
Spacing & size:
-
Mature size: around 3–4 m tall and wide (depending on rootstock).
-
Allow space for air circulation and easy picking.
-
-
Container growing:
-
Can be grown in a large pot (50 cm+) if on dwarfing rootstock.
-
Use a loam-based compost (John Innes No.3) and ensure good drainage.
-
Care & Maintenance
Once established, Cherry ‘Morello’ is straightforward to look after, rewarding with heavy crops.
-
Watering:
-
Keep soil consistently moist in the first few years, especially in dry spells.
-
Established trees cope with drought but fruit better if watered in hot, dry summers.
-
-
Feeding:
-
In spring, apply a balanced fruit tree fertiliser or well-rotted manure around the base.
-
Mulch with compost or leaf mould to keep moisture in and suppress weeds.
-
-
Pruning:
-
Prune after fruiting in mid- to late summer to avoid silver leaf disease.
-
Remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches to keep an open shape.
-
Avoid winter pruning.
-
-
Fruit thinning & support:
-
Usually not necessary as ‘Morello’ sets a balanced crop naturally.
-
Support heavy fruiting branches if they start to droop.
-
-
Pests & diseases:
-
Watch for aphids, cherry blackfly, or birds taking fruit — netting may help protect crops.
-
Generally disease-resistant but can be affected by canker or silver leaf if pruned in winter.
-
-
Frost protection:
-
Protect blossom with fleece if late frosts are forecast in spring.
-
Design Uses & Seasonal Interest
‘Morello’ is as beautiful as it is productive, adding ornamental and edible value.
-
