Cherry ‘Morello’ Care Guide

Prunus cerasus ‘Morello’ is a self-fertile sour cherry tree ideal for small to medium gardens. It’s loved for its abundant crops of dark-red cherries, which have a rich, tart flavour perfect for jams, pies, preserves, and liqueurs. More tolerant of shade and cooler conditions than sweet cherries, ‘Morello’ is an easy, reliable fruit tree that also offers attractive blossom in spring and colourful fruit in summer.

Planting & Position

Choosing the right site will help your cherry tree establish and crop well for years to come.

• Light requirements:

  • Best in full sun, but ‘Morello’ also tolerates partial shade better than sweet cherries.

• Shelter:

  • Prefers a sheltered site, protected from cold, drying winds.

  • Avoid frost pockets where late spring frosts may damage blossom.

• Soil:

  • Thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

  • Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6–7).

  • Avoid shallow, chalky, or waterlogged ground.

• Planting time:

  • Best planted in late autumn to early spring when the tree is dormant and soil is workable.

  • Container-grown trees can be planted year-round if watered well.

• Spacing & size:

  • Mature size: around 3–4 m tall and wide (depending on rootstock).

  • Prune after fruiting in mid- to late summer to avoid silver leaf disease.

  • Usually not necessary as ‘Morello’ sets a balanced crop naturally.

  • Support heavy fruiting branches if they start to droop.

  • Generally disease-resistant but can be affected by canker or silver leaf if pruned in winter.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
