Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. In cooler climates, full sun promotes better flowering; in hotter areas, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.

• Soil Preferences: Thrives in well-drained soils—loam, sandy, or chalky types are ideal. Avoid heavy clay unless improved with organic matter.

• pH Range: Tolerates a wide range from slightly acidic to alkaline (pH 6.0–8.0).

• Moisture Needs: Once established, it is drought-tolerant, but young plants require regular watering during their first growing season.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn when the soil is workable and warm enough to encourage root establishment.

• Spacing: Allow 1.5–2 metres between plants to accommodate mature size and allow airflow.

• Positioning Tips: Excellent for mixed borders, hedging, or as a specimen shrub. Works well in both formal and informal garden designs.

• Shelter Needs: Hardy but appreciates shelter from cold, drying winds in exposed locations.

• Companion Planting: Complements spring bulbs, lavenders, hebes, and other evergreen shrubs.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first year until established.

  • Once mature, water only in prolonged dry spells, especially during summer.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote lush foliage and abundant blooms.

• Pruning:

  • Prune lightly after flowering in late spring to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth.

  • Remove any dead or damaged branches at the same time.

  • For rejuvenation, older plants can be cut back by about one-third in early spring.

• Mulching: Apply a 5 cm layer of compost, bark chips, or well-rotted manure in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil health. Keep mulch away from the plant’s crown.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally trouble-free, though occasional aphid infestations can occur—treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy in most of the UK and Ireland; young plants may benefit from a fleece wrap in extreme frost.

• Propagation: Easily propagated from semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer.

• Foliage: Attractive, glossy, aromatic evergreen leaves that release a citrus scent when crushed.

  • Excellent specimen shrub for lawns, patios, or courtyards.

  • Works well in mixed borders alongside perennials and other shrubs.

  • Suitable for low-maintenance gardens and Mediterranean-style planting schemes.

  • Can be clipped for informal hedging or screening.

• Growth and Size: A rounded, dense evergreen shrub typically reaching 2–2.5 metres in height and spread.

• Longevity: Long-lived and dependable if pruned and fed annually.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
