Description

Planting and Positioning
Choisya ternata, commonly known as Mexican Orange Blossom, is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its aromatic foliage and clusters of fragrant white flowers. Even at 25–30 cm, it establishes quickly and grows into a tidy, rounded shrub with minimal fuss.

Best Location: Prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot. While it thrives in full sun, it can tolerate light shade, especially in warmer regions.

Sheltered Position: Choose a sheltered position, such as near a fence or wall, to protect from strong winds and frost pockets.

Soil Type: Grows well in most soil types, but it prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid overly wet or heavy clay soils.

Soil Preparation: Before planting, dig in compost or other organic matter to improve structure and drainage, particularly in heavier soils.

Planting Hole: Dig a hole about twice as wide and the same depth as the plant’s container. Loosen soil at the bottom for better root spread.

Planting Depth: Place the root ball at the same depth it was in the pot, backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly.

Spacing: Allow 50 to 100 cm between Choisya and other plants, depending on your design goals and whether it’s planted in a mixed border or as a low hedge.

Routine Care and Maintenance
Once established, Choisya ternata is a low-maintenance shrub that adds year-round structure, scent, and colour to gardens. It’s a popular choice for beginner and experienced gardeners alike.

Watering: Water well after planting and continue to water regularly during dry spells in the first growing season. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant.

Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in early spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil structure. Avoid direct contact with the stem.

Feeding: Feed in spring with a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and flowering. An additional feed after the first flowering can boost a second flush.

Evergreen Foliage: The glossy, deep green leaves remain throughout the year and emit a pleasant citrus scent when crushed.

Flowering Time: Produces clusters of star-shaped white flowers in late spring (May–June) and often again in late summer to early autumn if conditions are favourable.

Container Growing: Choisya is also suitable for large containers. Use a soil-based compost with good drainage and feed regularly during the growing season.

Attracts Pollinators: The fragrant flowers attract bees and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Pruning and Seasonal Care
Choisya ternata is naturally compact and rounded, but light pruning can help maintain its shape and encourage denser growth.

When to Prune: Prune after flowering in late spring or early summer. This allows time for new growth to develop and form buds for the next season.

How to Prune: Trim back flowered stems by about one-third. Cut just above a pair of healthy leaves to encourage bushier growth.

Rejuvenation Pruning: Older or leggy plants can be cut back harder in spring to promote fresh, vigorous growth, though flowering may be reduced in that year.

Cold Protection: Generally hardy, but younger plants or those in exposed positions may need protection from severe frost with fleece or a winter mulch.

Pest and Disease Resistance: Choisya is typically free from serious pests or diseases, though it may suffer from leaf scorch if grown in poorly drained soil or exposed to cold winds.

Seasonal Interest: Provides interest in all seasons—lush green foliage in winter, sweetly scented blooms in spring, and tidy form year-round.

Choisya ternata 25–30 CM is a versatile, compact shrub that fits perfectly into borders, containers, and low hedging schemes. With aromatic foliage, beautiful blooms, and very little maintenance required, it's an excellent choice for any garden. Whether used as a standalone specimen or as part of a mixed planting, it offers long-lasting beauty and value throughout the year
