General Information

Chrysanthemums, often called “mums”, have been grown for centuries for their showy, long-lasting flowers. The ¼ Standard form is a specially trained version that offers tidy proportions while retaining the boldness of traditional chrysanthemums.

• Height & spread: Typically 60–80cm tall (including stem and crown) with a flower head spread of 30–40cm.

Planting

• When to plant: Best in late spring to early summer, or purchased ready-potted in late summer for instant colour.

• Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; if planting multiple standards, space 50–60cm apart.

• Containers: Use a large, heavy pot with good drainage holes; add grit or crock at the base.

Watering & Feeding

• Water regularly, especially in hot weather – soil should remain moist but never waterlogged.

• Container-grown plants may need daily watering in dry spells.

• Feed every 1–2 weeks during flowering with a high-potash fertiliser to support abundant blooms.

Pruning & Maintenance

• Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming.

• Remove yellowing leaves to keep the plant tidy.

• At the end of the season, plants are often discarded, but they can be overwintered in a frost-free greenhouse if desired.

• If overwintering, cut stems back to around 10cm and keep the soil just damp until growth resumes in spring.

Protection

• Not frost hardy; bring indoors or under cover before the first frosts.

• In sheltered areas, plants may last outdoors slightly longer, but protection is recommended for longevity.

• Watch for aphids and mildew – both are uncommon but may occur in warm, humid conditions.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
