Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Needs full sun for the best flowering and compact growth. A sunny position ensures vibrant blooms and healthy foliage.

  • Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained soil—sandy, gravelly, or light loam works best. Avoid heavy or clay soils unless amended for improved drainage.

  • pH Range: Tolerates slightly acidic to alkaline soils (pH 6.0–8.0).

  • Moisture Needs: Drought-tolerant once established, but ensure steady watering during its first growing season. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish in mild conditions.

  • Spacing: Space plants 1–1.2 metres apart to allow their natural spreading habit and good airflow.

  • Positioning Tips: Ideal for Mediterranean-style gardens, sunny borders, gravel gardens, slopes, and coastal planting schemes.

  • Shelter Needs: Hardy in most UK and Irish climates but benefits from a sheltered site to protect flowers from heavy rain or wind.

  • Companion Planting: Pairs well with lavender, rosemary, thyme, and ornamental grasses in low-water landscapes.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly during the first season until roots establish.

    • Once established, water sparingly—only during prolonged dry periods.

  • Feeding: Apply a light general-purpose feed in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid overfeeding as it may cause excessive leafy growth with fewer blooms.

  • Pruning:

    • Lightly trim after flowering in early to mid-summer to maintain shape and promote fresh growth.

    • Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as it may not reshoot.

  • Mulching: Use a gravel or grit mulch around the base to aid drainage and suppress weeds—avoid heavy organic mulches that retain excess moisture.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free and disease-resistant; main risk is root rot from poor drainage.

  • Winter Care: Fully hardy in well-drained soil; in wetter regions, plant on a slope or raised bed for better drainage and frost protection.

  • Propagation: Can be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings in late summer for best results.

Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses

  • Foliage: Silvery-grey, slightly hairy evergreen leaves create a striking contrast against its delicate flowers and provide year-round interest.

  • Flowers: Produces masses of soft pink, crinkled, paper-like blooms with golden-yellow centres from late spring to midsummer. Each bloom lasts only a day but is quickly replaced, creating a continuous display.

  • Fragrance: Foliage is lightly aromatic, adding a subtle scent to the garden.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

  • Ornamental Value: Offers a showy, long-lasting floral display and attractive evergreen foliage that brightens up sunny spots.

  • Garden Design Uses:

    • Excellent for rock gardens and Mediterranean-style borders.

    • Works well as ground cover on sunny slopes.

    • Great for coastal gardens due to salt tolerance.

    • Pairs beautifully with other drought-tolerant plants in gravel beds.

  • Growth and Size: Low-growing, spreading shrub typically reaching 30–45 cm in height and up to 1 metre in spread.

  • Longevity: Can thrive for many years in the right conditions with minimal care.

  • Seasonal Appeal: Evergreen structure ensures year-round presence, with a burst of colourful blooms in late spring and summer.
