Convolvulus cneorum – Planting & Care Guide

About Convolvulus cneorum

Convolvulus cneorum, commonly known as Silverbush, is a beautiful evergreen shrub admired for its silky silver-grey foliage and masses of pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers with soft yellow centres. Flowering from late spring into early summer, this Mediterranean native brings brightness, texture and elegance to borders, gravel gardens and coastal landscapes.

Its compact, rounded habit grows to approximately 60–90cm tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for sunny gardens where its shimmering foliage provides year-round interest. Drought tolerant once established, Convolvulus cneorum thrives in well-drained soils and is particularly suited to coastal locations and dry garden conditions.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun for the best flowering and healthiest growth.
  • Choose a sheltered position with excellent air circulation.
  • Prefers light, well-drained soil and dislikes heavy, waterlogged conditions.
  • Suitable for sandy, chalky and loamy soils.
  • Improve heavy clay by adding horticultural grit and organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a light mulch of gravel around the base to help suppress weeds while improving drainage.
  • Space plants approximately 75–90cm apart to allow room for mature growth.

Care & Maintenance

Convolvulus cneorum is an easy-care shrub once established.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.
  • Avoid overwatering, particularly during winter.
  • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Avoid excessive feeding, which may encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
  • Keep the area around the plant free from weeds.
  • Ensure good drainage at all times to prevent root problems.
  • Avoid planting in areas where winter water tends to collect.
  • Protect young plants from severe frosts in particularly exposed locations.

Pruning

Regular light pruning helps maintain a compact shape.

  • Lightly trim after flowering to keep the shrub neat and bushy.
  • Remove any dead, damaged or diseased branches as needed.
  • Avoid cutting back into old woody stems, as regrowth can be slow.
  • Remove faded flowers if desired, although deadheading is not essential.
  • Light annual pruning encourages dense, healthy growth.
