Description

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Requires full sun to maintain compact growth, silvery foliage, and abundant flowering.

  • Soil Preferences: Prefers light, well-drained soils—sandy or loamy types are best. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.

  • pH Range: Tolerates a wide pH range but thrives in slightly alkaline to neutral soils.

  • Moisture Needs: Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from light, regular watering in prolonged dry spells.

  • Planting Time: Plant in spring after frost risk has passed or in early autumn in mild regions.

  • Spacing: Allow 50–60 cm between plants to encourage airflow and prevent overcrowding.

  • Positioning Tips: Ideal for rock gardens, Mediterranean-style beds, raised planters, or coastal gardens due to salt and wind tolerance.

  • Shelter Needs: Enjoys exposure to sun and breeze but prefers some shelter from very cold, drying winter winds.

  • Container Growing: Performs well in pots with a gritty compost mix; ensure good drainage holes.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Keep evenly moist while establishing.

    • Once mature, water sparingly—overwatering can lead to root rot.

    • Container plants may need watering more often in summer but must never stand in water.

  • Feeding: Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy foliage and long-lasting blooms.

  • Pruning:

    • Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape and encourage compact growth.

    • Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as new shoots may be slow to emerge.

  • Mulching: Apply a light mulch of gravel or small stones rather than organic mulch to improve drainage and enhance the plant’s silver colour.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Naturally resistant to most pests; occasional aphids or spider mites may appear in very dry conditions—treat promptly.

  • Winter Care: Hardy in milder regions; in colder areas, provide fleece protection in severe frost or overwinter containers in a sheltered location.

  • Weed Control: Keep the surrounding area weed-free to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses

  • Foliage: Striking evergreen leaves covered in silky silver hairs, providing a luminous contrast to green foliage in the garden.

  • Flowers: Produces masses of silky white, funnel-shaped flowers with a soft yellow centre from late spring through summer.

  • Fragrance: Flowers have a light, pleasant scent, especially noticeable on warm days.

  • Form: Compact, rounded, mound-forming shrub that stays neat without constant pruning.

  • Growth Rate and Size: Moderate growth; typically reaches 40–60 cm in height with a similar spread.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects.

  • Ornamental Value: Highly decorative in sunny borders, adding brightness and texture; silver foliage pairs well with purple, blue, or pink-flowering plants.

  • Garden Design Uses:

    • Mediterranean-style gardens for a sun-loving, drought-tolerant feature.

    • Rock gardens and gravel beds where drainage is excellent.

    • Coastal gardens due to salt tolerance.

    • Containers for patios and terraces.

  • Seasonal Appeal: Offers year-round foliage interest and a summer display of white blooms.

  • Longevity: Long-lived in the right conditions; thrives with minimal intervention once established.
