Planting Conditions and Ideal Location
-
Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun for best leaf colour, which develops rich orange, red, and pink tones. Will tolerate partial shade, but colour may be less vibrant.
-
Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained soil—sandy, loamy, or light clay soils improved with grit are suitable.
-
pH Range: Adaptable to a range of soils from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline (pH 6.0–7.5).
-
Moisture Needs: Moderate water needs—likes moist soil during establishment but becomes drought-tolerant once mature.
-
Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow strong root growth before temperature extremes.
-
Spacing: Space plants 80–100 cm apart for hedging or feature planting.
-
Positioning Tips: Excellent choice for mixed borders, coastal gardens, and contemporary landscapes thanks to its colour and form.
-
Shelter Needs: In colder climates, choose a sheltered site to protect from frost and drying winds; ideal for coastal areas due to salt tolerance.
-
Container Growing: Perfect for pots—use a free-draining compost mix and ensure containers have adequate drainage holes.
Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance
-
Watering:
-
Water regularly during the first season to establish roots.
-
Once established, water deeply during prolonged dry periods, especially in summer.
-
Avoid overwatering, particularly in winter.
-
-
Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote strong growth and vibrant foliage colour.
-
Pruning:
-
Lightly prune in late spring or summer to maintain shape and encourage bushiness.
-
Remove any damaged, dead, or crossing stems.
-
Can be shaped into low hedges or left to develop a natural rounded form.
-
-
Mulching: Apply a 5 cm layer of bark or compost around the base in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the plant’s crown.
-
Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free; occasionally scale insects or aphids may occur—treat promptly if needed.
-
Winter Care: Hardy in mild areas; in colder regions, grow in a container to move to a frost-free area during severe weather or protect with horticultural fleece.
-
Weed Control: Keep the base clear of weeds to ensure good air circulation and prevent nutrient competition.
Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses
-
Foliage: Evergreen with glossy leaves that shift through seasonal colours—green in summer, deepening to gold, orange, red, and pink in cooler months.
-
Flowers: Tiny, inconspicuous blooms in spring—primarily grown for striking foliage rather than flowers.
-
Form: Dense, compact shrub with a rounded, bushy habit.
-
Growth Rate and Size: Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 1–1.5 metres high with a similar spread at maturity.
-
Wildlife Benefits: Provides shelter for small birds and beneficial insects.
-
Ornamental Value: Year-round colour display enhances planting schemes, especially in winter when many plants are dormant.
-
Garden Design Uses:
-
Feature plant in sunny borders.
-
Low-maintenance hedging or screening.
-
Coastal gardens due to salt tolerance.
-
Mixed foliage schemes to contrast with silver, blue, or dark green plants.
-
Container displays for patios and terraces.
-
-
Seasonal Appeal: Evergreen structure combined with changing leaf colour offers interest in all seasons.
-
Longevity: Long-lived and easy to maintain when grown in suitable conditions, making it a reliable addition to any garden.
