CORNUS IN VARIETIES

Planting & Position

• Light:

  • Best colour and growth in full sun to partial shade.

  • Full sun gives the strongest winter stem colour.

• Soil:

  • Grows in most soils including clay, loam and sandy earth.

  • Prefers moist, well-drained but not dry conditions.

  • Thrives near ponds and damp areas, but also handles normal garden soil.

• Spacing:

  • Most varieties grow 1.5–3 m tall and wide, depending on type.

  • Space generously to allow a natural, bushy shape.

• Planting time:

  • Plant in autumn or spring for best establishment.

Care & Maintenance

Cornus shrubs are very easy-going, perfect for low-maintenance gardens.

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first season.

  • Established shrubs cope well with normal rainfall.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a general shrub fertiliser in early spring to boost new growth.

• Pruning (important for stem colour):

  • For the brightest winter stems, cut back hard in late winter/early spring (March).

  • Remove stems to 20–30 cm from the ground to encourage strong new shoots.

  • If you prefer a larger shrub, lightly thin out older stems instead.

• Mulching:

  • Mulch each spring to retain soil moisture and encourage vigorous new stems.

• Hardiness:

  • Fully hardy in all parts of Ireland and the UK.

Seasonal Interest & Uses

• Winter stems:

  • Some varieties offer fiery red, bright yellow, coral-orange or burgundy stems, giving superb colour in the coldest months.

• Spring & summer:

  • Fresh green or variegated foliage; some forms also produce small white flowers followed by berries.

• Autumn:

  • Many cornus varieties develop rich autumn foliage in shades of red, purple or orange.

• Ideal for:

  • Winter-interest borders

  • Waterside planting

  • Mass planting for colour blocks

  • Wildlife-friendly gardens

  • Low-maintenance landscapes

  • Adding structure and colour to mixed shrub beds

• Wildlife value:

  • Flowers attract pollinators; berries are valued by birds.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
