Cosmos atrosanguineus 'Chocamocha' – Planting & Care Guide
About Cosmos atrosanguineus 'Chocamocha'
Cosmos atrosanguineus 'Chocamocha', commonly known as the Chocolate Cosmos, is a compact perennial renowned for its rich, velvety burgundy-red flowers and delicious chocolate-vanilla fragrance. Blooming continuously from early summer until the first frosts, this unique variety adds both colour and scent to borders, containers and patio displays.
Growing to approximately 30–40cm tall with a spread of 30–40cm, 'Chocamocha' is smaller and more compact than the traditional Chocolate Cosmos, making it ideal for smaller gardens and pots. The deep green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the striking flowers, while the nectar-rich blooms attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering and fragrance.
- Choose a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds.
- Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
- Improve heavy soils with compost and horticultural grit before planting.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots.
- Position the plant so the crown sits level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a light layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture while keeping the crown clear.
- Space plants approximately 30–40cm apart to allow for healthy growth and airflow.
Care & Maintenance
Cosmos 'Chocamocha' is easy to care for and flowers continuously throughout the season.

Pruning
