COTONEASTER HORIZONTALIS (RP)

Overview & Features

• Cotoneaster horizontalis is a low-growing, deciduous shrub known for its distinctive herringbone branching pattern.

• Features small, glossy green leaves arranged in neat, horizontal layers.

• Produces small pale pink to white flowers in late spring.

• Flowers are followed by bright red berries in autumn.

• Foliage turns attractive shades of red and orange in autumn before leaf fall.

• Typically grows 60–100 cm in height and can spread up to 2 metres.

• Ideal for ground cover, walls, banks, and slopes.

• Highly attractive to bees in flower and birds when in berry.

This shrub is valued for its structured growth habit and strong autumn and winter interest.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.

• Best berry production and autumn colour occur in full sun.

• Prefers well-drained soil but tolerates most soil types.

• Suitable for poor or chalky soils.

• Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and the same depth.

• Plant at the same depth as it was in the container and firm gently.

• Ideal for planting against walls or cascading over edges.

Cotoneaster horizontalis is hardy and adaptable once established.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

• Once established, plants are drought tolerant.

• Avoid excessive watering, especially in winter.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser if soil is poor.

• Flowering typically occurs in late spring.

• Red berries develop in autumn and may persist into winter.

Full sun supports better flowering and heavier berry production.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Minimal pruning required due to its natural layered shape.

• Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing stems as needed.

• Can be lightly trimmed after flowering if shaping is required.

• Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

• Generally low maintenance and hardy in most garden conditions.

• Monitor for signs of fireblight in susceptible areas.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
