    Description

Craspedia globosa ‘Golf Beauty’ – Striking Golden Drumsticks

The Craspedia globosa ‘Golf Beauty’, commonly known as Billy Buttons or Drumstick Flower, is an unusual and eye-catching perennial (often grown as an annual) that produces distinctive globe-shaped, golden-yellow flowers on tall, wiry stems. Native to Australia and New Zealand, this plant is a fantastic choice for gardeners looking to add something different to their borders or cut-flower arrangements.

The perfectly rounded blooms sit like golden spheres above silvery-green foliage, creating an architectural look that works beautifully in modern gardens, prairie plantings, or mixed borders. Long-lasting both in the garden and in vases, ‘Golf Beauty’ is prized for its use as a fresh cut flower as well as for dried arrangements, where the globes retain their colour and form for months.

    General Information

Craspedia globosa ‘Golf Beauty’ is grown for its distinctive flowers, which are both playful and elegant.

    • Habit: Upright perennial with clumps of basal foliage and tall flowering stems.

    • Height & spread: Typically grows 40–60cm tall and 20–30cm wide.

    • Foliage: Narrow, silvery-green, grass-like leaves forming a neat mound at the base.

    • Flowers: Dense, spherical, golden-yellow heads (2–3cm across) borne on slender stems.

    • Flowering season: June to September in the UK, lasting well into autumn if deadheaded.

    • Position: Prefers full sun for the strongest growth and most flowers.

    • Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soils are ideal; tolerates poor soil but not waterlogging.

    • Hardiness: Half-hardy perennial; in the UK it is often treated as an annual, though it can survive mild winters in well-drained soils.

    • Uses: Excellent for borders, prairie-style gardens, cut flowers, and dried arrangements.

With its modern, geometric flower heads, this plant adds a designer touch to beds and borders and is a favourite among florists.

    Care Guide

Craspedia globosa ‘Golf Beauty’ is easy to grow with the right conditions and rewards gardeners with months of unique blooms.

    Planting

    • When to plant: Best in spring after the risk of frost has passed.

    • Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, spacing 25–30cm apart to allow airflow.

    • Preparation: Choose a sunny site with sharp drainage; improve heavy soils with grit or sand.

    • Containers: Can be grown in pots – use a free-draining compost mix.

    Watering & Feeding

    • Water regularly during establishment, but avoid overwatering.

    • Once established, Craspedia is drought-tolerant and only needs occasional watering in prolonged dry spells.

    • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring, or liquid feed every 3–4 weeks during flowering.

    Pruning & Maintenance

    • Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous flowering through summer.

    • Cut stems when flower heads are fully formed for cut arrangements; they last for weeks in fresh water.

    • For dried flowers, harvest when blooms are fully open and hang stems upside down in a dark, dry place.

    • If overwintering, cut back old growth in autumn and protect the crown with mulch in mild climates.

    Protection

    • Not fully hardy in colder areas; protect with fleece or bring container plants into a frost-free greenhouse for winter.

    • Generally pest- and disease-free, making it a low-maintenance choice.
