Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie' – Planting & Care Guide
About Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie'
Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie', commonly known as Montbretia, is a striking clump-forming perennial renowned for its large, brilliant orange flowers with contrasting deep red to mahogany centres. The exotic-looking, funnel-shaped flowers are carried on gracefully arching stems above upright, sword-like green foliage.
Flowering from mid to late summer, 'Emily McKenzie' provides a vibrant splash of colour when many earlier perennials are beginning to fade. Growing to approximately 60–80cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, it is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and bold summer planting schemes.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering.
- Will tolerate light partial shade, although flowering may be reduced.
- Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- Suitable for loam, sandy and clay soils provided drainage is adequate.
- Improve poor soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
- Improve heavy, wet soil with organic matter and horticultural grit.
- Plant container-grown plants at the same depth as they were growing in their pot.
- Firm gently and water thoroughly after planting.
- Apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and improve soil conditions.
- Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart.
Care & Maintenance
Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie' is relatively easy to grow once established.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Keep adequately watered during prolonged dry periods.
- Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring.
- Apply compost or well-rotted organic matter around established clumps each spring.
- Avoid allowing plants to become excessively dry while developing flowers.
- Leave the foliage intact after flowering so it can replenish the underground corms.
- Avoid prolonged winter waterlogging.
Pruning
Very little pruning is required.
- Remove faded flower stems after flowering if a tidy appearance is preferred.
- Leave healthy foliage in place during autumn.
- Allow the leaves to yellow and die back naturally.
- Cut dead foliage down to ground level in late autumn or early spring.
- Divide overcrowded clumps every 3–5 years in spring to maintain flowering performance.
