Crocosmia 'George Davison' – Planting & Care Guide

About Crocosmia 'George Davison'

Crocosmia 'George Davison', commonly known as Montbretia, is a vibrant, clump-forming perennial admired for its graceful sprays of golden-yellow, funnel-shaped flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. The elegant flowers are held on arching stems above fans of fresh green, sword-shaped foliage, adding movement and colour to the garden.

Growing to approximately 60–80cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, 'George Davison' is an excellent choice for borders, cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly planting. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, while the blooms also make excellent cut flowers.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
  • Suitable for loam, sandy and clay soils with good drainage.
  • Improve heavy soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Plant corms or container-grown plants with the crown just below the soil surface.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball.
  • Firm the soil gently and water thoroughly after planting.
  • Apply a light mulch to help retain moisture.
  • Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Crocosmia 'George Davison' is easy to grow and becomes more impressive each year.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to replenish the corms.
  • Established clumps are drought tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture during active growth.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

  • Remove spent flower stems once flowering has finished.
  • Leave the foliage until it has turned yellow or brown naturally.
  • Cut back dead foliage in late autumn or early spring.
  • Divide congested clumps every 4–5 years in spring to maintain vigorous flowering.
