Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is one of the most popular and striking cultivars of the Crocosmia genus, admired for its vivid scarlet-red flowers, arching stems, and sword-shaped foliage. A member of the iris family (Iridaceae), Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is a clump-forming, herbaceous perennial that brings drama and energy to borders from mid to late summer.

Bred for colour intensity and height, 'Lucifer' is loved by gardeners and designers for both its flame-like blooms and architectural form. It also attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbird moths, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Planting and Growing Conditions

Crocosmia 'Lucifer' thrives in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. It’s easy to grow and highly rewarding with the right conditions.

• Light Requirements:

  • Full sun is ideal for best flowering

  • Tolerates light partial shade but may produce fewer flowers

• Soil Preferences:

  • Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil

  • Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas

  • Enrich planting areas with compost or leaf mould

• Planting Tips:

  • Plant corms in spring, 8–10 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart

  • For pot-grown plants, plant at same depth as in pot

  • Position in groups for visual impact and upright growth support

Care and Maintenance

Once established, Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is low maintenance and provides year-after-year performance with minimal effort.

• Watering:

  • Water well during dry spells in the growing season

  • Avoid overwatering once established—drought tolerant

• Feeding:

  • Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser

  • A mulch of compost or well-rotted manure improves health and bloom

• Staking:

  • In exposed or windy sites, support may be needed for the tall flower spikes

  • Plant in groups so they support each other naturally

• Deadheading and Pruning:

  • Remove spent flower stems to encourage more blooms

  • In late autumn, allow foliage to die back naturally and cut to the base in late winter

• Dividing:

  • Clumps may become crowded after 3–4 years

  • Lift and divide corms in spring or autumn to rejuvenate and propagate

Hardiness and Winter Care

  • Mulch with bark or compost in late autumn if risk of frost is high

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
