Crocosmia 'Lucifer' – Planting & Care Guide
About Crocosmia 'Lucifer'
Crocosmia 'Lucifer', commonly known as Montbretia 'Lucifer', is one of the most striking summer-flowering perennials, producing tall arching stems of brilliant scarlet-red, trumpet-shaped flowers above elegant, sword-like green foliage. Flowering from mid to late summer, it provides a bold splash of colour when many other perennials are reaching their peak.
Growing to approximately 90–120cm tall with a spread of 45–60cm, 'Lucifer' forms clumps that gradually increase in size each year. The vibrant flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, while the long-lasting blooms are excellent for cutting. Its upright habit makes it a superb choice for adding height and drama to borders.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun or partial shade.
- Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds.
- Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
- Plant corms or container-grown plants with the crown approximately 8–10cm below the soil surface.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the appropriate depth.
- Position the plant carefully and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently and water thoroughly after planting.
- Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
- Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart to allow room for mature growth.
Care & Maintenance
Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is an easy-to-grow perennial that provides years of reliable summer colour.

- Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
- Avoid disturbing established clumps unless division is required.
- Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.
Pruning

- Divide overcrowded clumps every 4–5 years in spring to maintain vigorous growth.
- Remove any damaged or diseased leaves as required.
