Description

Overview & Features

  • Cytisus, commonly known as Broom, is a deciduous shrub grown for its masses of vibrant spring flowers.

  • Available in a range of varieties featuring colours such as yellow, orange, red, pink, and bi-colour combinations.

  • Produces pea-like flowers that cover the stems in late spring to early summer.

  • Slender green stems provide structure even when not in flower.

  • Forms an upright to arching habit depending on the variety.

  • Typically grows 1–2 metres in height and spread.

  • Ideal for borders, banks, coastal gardens, and low-maintenance planting.

  • Attractive to bees and pollinators.

Cytisus is valued for its dramatic spring display and ability to thrive in poorer soils.

Planting & Positioning

  • Plant in full sun for best flowering performance.

  • Requires well-drained soil and dislikes heavy, waterlogged conditions.

  • Thrives in sandy, gravelly, or moderately fertile soils.

  • Avoid rich, overly fertile soils, which can reduce flowering.

  • Ideal for slopes, open borders, and coastal gardens.

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and the same depth.

  • Plant at the same depth as it was in the container and firm gently.

  • Choose a sheltered position protected from very strong winds.

Cytisus performs best in sunny, free-draining sites.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

  • Once established, plants are drought tolerant.

  • Avoid overwatering, especially during winter.

  • Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced fertiliser if soil is very poor.

  • Excess feeding encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

  • Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer.

  • Full sun encourages the heaviest bloom coverage.

Good drainage and sunlight are key to abundant flowering.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

  • Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape.

  • Lightly trim back flowered stems, avoiding old woody growth.

  • Do not cut into old wood, as regrowth is often poor.

  • Remove any dead or damaged stems as needed.

  • Mulch lightly in spring to conserve moisture.

  • Generally low maintenance once established.

With full sun and sharp drainage, Cytisus varieties will provide a vibrant burst of colour each spring and reliable garden performance year after year
