Daphne Mix – Fragrant Shrubs for Year-Round Garden Beauty
The Daphne Mix offers a stunning collection of these much-loved shrubs, celebrated for their intoxicating fragrance, glossy evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage, and seasonal clusters of flowers. Daphnes are cherished by gardeners for their ability to perfume the garden, often flowering in late winter or early spring when little else is in bloom. With a mix of varieties, you can enjoy different flower colours, forms, and flowering times, ensuring prolonged interest throughout the year.
Compact, elegant, and versatile, daphnes are perfect for borders, containers, or near doorways and paths where their fragrance can be fully appreciated. The Daphne Mix provides variety and charm in one package, offering gardeners an opportunity to showcase these treasures in multiple styles and settings.
General Information
Daphnes are native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa and have a long history as ornamental shrubs. Each variety has its own distinctive look, but all share the signature fragrance and attractive foliage.
-
Habit: Compact, bushy, evergreen or semi-evergreen shrubs, depending on the variety.
-
Height & spread: Typically range from 60cm–1.5m tall and wide, depending on type.
-
Foliage: Glossy, leathery green leaves; some varieties have variegated foliage with cream or yellow edges.
-

-
Fragrance: Famous for their powerful, sweet perfume that fills the air around them.
-
Position: Best in full sun to partial shade; avoid very exposed or windy sites.
-
Soil: Moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil; daphnes dislike waterlogged or very dry ground.
-
Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland, though they prefer sheltered positions.
-
Uses: Perfect for borders, containers, patios, or near paths and entrances where fragrance can be enjoyed.
The mix ensures a range of flower colours and habits, offering diversity and beauty across the seasons.
Care Guide
Daphnes can be slightly particular about their conditions, but with the right care they reward you with unmatched fragrance and long-lasting beauty.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or autumn, allowing time to establish before hot or cold extremes.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; allow 60–90cm spacing depending on variety.
-
Preparation: Enrich soil with compost or leaf mould to improve drainage and fertility.
-
Containers: Ideal for pots with free-draining compost; perfect for patios or entrances.
Watering & Feeding
-
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
-
Water regularly during dry spells, especially for container-grown plants.
-
Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and flowering.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Minimal pruning required – only remove dead or damaged stems after flowering.
-
Avoid heavy pruning, as daphnes dislike being cut back hard.
-
Mulch annually in spring with compost or leaf mould to conserve moisture and enrich the soil.
Protection
-
Fully hardy, but best in a sheltered spot to protect from harsh winds.
-
Container plants may need extra insulation in very cold winters.
-
Generally pest- and disease-free, though root disturbance should be avoided.
