Overview & Features

• Dianthus carthusianorum ‘I Love U’ is a compact perennial known for its striking, richly coloured pink-red blooms.

• Produces clusters of lightly fringed flowers with a subtle clove-like fragrance.

• Flowers from late spring through summer, often with repeat blooms if deadheaded.

• Forms neat clumps of slender, grey-green foliage.

• Typically reaches 25–40 cm in height, suitable for the front or middle of borders.

• Ideal for cottage gardens, gravel gardens, edging, and patio containers.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun for the best flowering and compact growth.

• Prefers well-drained soil and does not tolerate winter waterlogging.

• Thrives in light, sandy, or gritty soils.

• Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand before planting.

• Ideal for raised beds, alpine gardens, and container planting.

• Dig a hole slightly wider and the same depth as the pot.

• Position the crown level with the soil surface.

• Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly after planting.

• Space plants approximately 25–30 cm apart to allow airflow and natural spread.

Dianthus performs best in sunny, open sites with excellent drainage.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

• Once established, plants are moderately drought tolerant.

• Avoid overwatering, especially during winter months.

• Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth.

• Apply a second light feed after the first flush of flowers to encourage repeat blooming.

• Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich fertilisers, which may promote foliage over flowers.

• Flowering typically begins in late spring and continues through summer.

• Deadhead regularly to extend the flowering period and maintain a tidy appearance.

Full sun and moderate feeding encourage abundant, long-lasting blooms.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Remove spent flower stems promptly to promote further flowering.

• Lightly trim back after the main flowering period to maintain a compact shape.

• Avoid cutting too deeply into older woody growth.

• Divide clumps every few years if plants become woody or sparse in the centre.

• Apply a light gravel mulch to improve drainage and reduce moisture around the crown.

• Generally low maintenance and pest resistant when grown in suitable conditions.

• Evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage may persist in milder climates.

Standard Delivery is FREE on orders over €250*

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via DPD Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis. 

* Only mainland Ireland addresses qualify for free delivery.
 

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
