Description

Introduction to Digitalis purpurea 'Hanabee Pink'

Digitalis purpurea 'Hanabee Pink', also known as foxglove, is a stunning perennial (often grown as a biennial) that brings vertical drama and romantic colour to cottage gardens, wildlife borders, and naturalistic planting schemes. This particular variety stands out for its soft rose-pink, bell-shaped flowers with delicate speckling inside, borne on tall, elegant spires. Blooming in early to mid-summer, 'Hanabee Pink' is a favourite among pollinators and gardeners alike.

Graceful, stately, and easy to grow, Digitalis is perfect for gardeners looking to add vertical interest and classic charm to shaded or part-shaded spots.

Planting and Positioning

To ensure healthy growth and prolific flowering, it's important to choose the right planting site and soil conditions for 'Hanabee Pink'.

  • Preferred Location:

    • Thrives best in partial shade but can also grow in full sun if the soil remains moist.

    • Ideal for woodland gardens, borders, and naturalistic settings.

  • Soil Requirements:

    • Prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil.

    • Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH.

    • Avoid overly wet or compacted soils, especially in winter.

  • Planting Tips:

    • Space plants 30–45 cm apart to allow good air circulation and prevent fungal diseases.

    • Plant in groups for the best visual effect and to help pollinators locate them easily.

    • Can be grown from plugs or young plants in spring or autumn.

  • Companion Plants:

    • Pairs beautifully with plants like geraniums, ferns, aquilegia, and hostas.

    • Works well alongside ornamental grasses and other upright perennials.

Care and Maintenance

Digitalis purpurea 'Hanabee Pink' is relatively easy to care for and rewards even basic maintenance with beautiful displays year after year.

  • Watering:

    • Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and while the plant is establishing.

    • Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, but don’t allow it to become soggy either.

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to promote strong growth.

    • Optional top-dressing with compost or well-rotted manure in autumn will help enrich the soil naturally.

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms and prevent self-seeding if not desired.

    • If allowed to go to seed, foxgloves will often self-sow freely, producing new plants the following year.

  • Support:

    • Tall flower spikes may need staking in windy locations.

    • Place canes early in the season to avoid damaging roots later on.

  • Pests and Diseases:

    • Generally pest-resistant.

    • Watch for aphids and slugs on young plants.

    • Avoid overcrowding and overwatering to prevent powdery mildew or leaf spot.

  • Toxicity:

    • All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.

    • Wear gloves when handling to avoid skin irritation.

Seasonal Highlights and Garden Value

Digitalis purpurea 'Hanabee Pink' not only delivers graceful vertical form and rich flower colour but also plays an important ecological role in garden environments.

  • Flowering Time:

    • Blooms from late spring to mid-summer (usually June to July).

    • Can rebloom lightly in late summer if deadheaded early.

  • Height and Spread:

    • Grows to around 80–100 cm tall.

    • Spreads approximately 30–40 cm at maturity.

  • Wildlife Benefits:

    • Attracts bees and other pollinators, particularly bumblebees that can navigate the tubular flowers.

    • Adds ecological value to pollinator-friendly planting schemes.

  • Garden Uses:

    • Perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens, cottage gardens, or wildflower-style plantings.

    • Provides elegant height in mixed perennial beds and looks particularly striking when planted en masse.

  • Overwintering:

    • If grown as a perennial, mulch lightly in autumn to protect the crown during harsh winters.

    • In colder climates or exposed areas, protect young plants with cloches or fleece during frost.

Digitalis purpurea 'Hanabee Pink' offers timeless elegance and dependable colour in shady or semi-shaded garden settings. With proper care, this plant will thrive and may even self-sow for future seasons, becoming a reliable and beautiful feature of your customer’s garden
