Doronicum orientale 'Little Leo' – Planting & Care Guide

About Doronicum orientale 'Little Leo'

Doronicum orientale 'Little Leo', commonly known as Leopard's Bane, is a compact, early-flowering perennial that brings cheerful colour to the garden in spring. It produces an abundance of bright golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers with sunny yellow centres that appear above neat clumps of fresh green foliage, often flowering when many other perennials are only beginning to emerge.

Growing to approximately 30–40cm tall with a spread of 30–40cm, 'Little Leo' is ideal for the front of borders, rockeries, woodland gardens and patio containers. Its compact habit makes it perfect for smaller gardens, while the vibrant flowers provide an early source of nectar for bees and other beneficial pollinating insects. The long-lasting blooms also make attractive cut flowers for spring arrangements.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • Prefers morning sun with light afternoon shade in warmer locations.
  • Grows best in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants approximately 30–40cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Doronicum 'Little Leo' is an easy-care perennial that performs reliably each spring.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging.
  • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Mulch annually with compost or leaf mould to improve soil fertility.
  • Remove weeds regularly while plants establish.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.
  • Divide mature clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour and flowering.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required to keep plants healthy.

  • Deadhead faded flowers to encourage a tidy appearance.
  • Remove flower stems once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering, as it stores energy for the following season.
  • Cut back dead foliage in late summer or autumn.
  • Remove damaged or diseased leaves as required.
