    Echinacea 'Courage'® – Planting & Care Guide

    About Echinacea 'Courage'®

Echinacea 'Courage'® is a stunning herbaceous perennial, admired for its large, vibrant daisy-like flowers and outstanding garden performance. Producing bold blooms in rich shades of pink to magenta with a prominent copper-orange cone, this variety flowers continuously from mid-summer through early autumn, providing long-lasting colour when many other perennials are beginning to fade.

Growing to approximately 60–80cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, 'Courage'® forms strong, upright clumps of dark green foliage that remain attractive throughout the growing season. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, while the seed heads provide food for birds later in the year. The blooms also make excellent long-lasting cut flowers.

    Planting Guide

    • Plant in full sun for the best flowering display.
    • Choose a position with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
    • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
    • Suitable for loam, sandy and chalky soils.
    • Improve heavy clay soils by adding compost and horticultural grit before planting.
    • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
    • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
    • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
    • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
    • Apply a light layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the crown.
    • Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart to allow for healthy growth and airflow.

    Care & Maintenance

Echinacea 'Courage'® is an easy-to-grow perennial that thrives with minimal care.

    • Water regularly during the first growing season.
    • Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.
    • Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during winter.
    • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
    • Avoid excessive feeding, which may encourage leafy growth instead of flowers.
    • Refresh mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
    • Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
    • Deadhead faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
    • Leave some seed heads in autumn to provide winter interest and food for birds.

    Pruning

Minimal pruning is required to keep the plant healthy and flowering well.

    • Deadhead spent flowers regularly during summer.
    • Leave some flower heads in place for autumn and winter interest if desired.
    • Cut stems back to 5–10cm above ground level in late winter or early spring.
    • Remove any dead or damaged foliage before new growth begins.
    • Divide mature clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour.
