Description and Characteristics

Echinacea purpurea Mix refers to a colourful blend of cultivars of the classic Eastern Purple Coneflower, known for their robust habit, daisy-like flowers, and long summer blooming season. This mix typically includes a vibrant palette of colours such as rose pink, magenta, pale pink, white, and even light coral or raspberry tones, centred around the species' signature prominent orange-brown cones.

These clump-forming herbaceous perennials grow upright with sturdy, branching stems and lance-shaped green foliage. The flower heads, held high above the foliage, attract bees, butterflies, and, later in the season, finches and other seed-eating birds. The long-lasting blooms are perfect for cutting and maintain their colour well even in intense summer sun.

Typical mature plants range from 70 to 100 cm in height and 40 to 60 cm in spread, depending on individual cultivars included in the mix. This makes the Echinacea purpurea Mix ideal for mid- to back-border planting, naturalistic schemes, and wildlife gardens.

  • Blend of Echinacea purpurea varieties in mixed colours

  • Flowering season: June to September

  • Height: 70–100 cm; Spread: 40–60 cm

  • Erect, self-supporting growth with strong stems

  • Excellent for pollinator support, prairie gardens, and cut flowers

  • Seed heads provide autumn interest and food for birds

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Echinacea purpurea Mix thrives in sunny, well-drained locations and requires minimal maintenance once established. It is valued for its heat tolerance, drought resistance, and season-long performance.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Requires full sun (at least 6 hours daily)

    • Tolerates light partial shade, especially in hot summer climates

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil

    • Performs well in loam, sandy loam, or chalky soil

    • Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay areas

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots

    • Once mature, it is drought-tolerant and needs only occasional watering

    • In containers, water when the surface feels dry

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring

    • Too much feeding can lead to leafy growth at the expense of flowers

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Deadhead faded blooms to prolong flowering

    • Leave seed heads in autumn for wildlife interest and texture

    • Cut back stems to base in late winter or early spring

  • Winter Care:

    • Hardy in Zones 3–9 (RHS H7)

    • Survives harsh winters with no lifting required

    • Ensure soil remains free-draining through winter months
