Light Requirements: Grows well in full sun to partial shade; full sun brings out the best leaf colour.
-
Soil Preferences: Tolerates a wide range of soils, from sandy to clay, as long as they are well-drained.
-
pH Range: Adaptable to both slightly acidic and alkaline soils (pH 6.0–8.0).
-
Moisture Needs: Prefers evenly moist soil during establishment but becomes drought-tolerant once mature.
-
Planting Time: Plant in spring or autumn to give roots time to establish before extreme weather.
-
Spacing: For hedging, space plants 80–100 cm apart; for standalone shrubs, allow more room to spread.
-
Positioning Tips: Perfect for hedges, screens, or as a stand-alone feature shrub.
-
Shelter Needs: Very hardy and wind-tolerant; thrives in coastal locations where other plants may struggle.
-
Container Growing: Suitable for large planters if pruned regularly to maintain shape and size.
Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance
-
Watering:
-
Keep the soil moist during the first growing season to establish deep roots.
-
Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.
-
Container plants require more frequent watering, particularly in summer.
-
-
Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to encourage strong growth and vibrant foliage.
-
Pruning:
-
Prune lightly once or twice a year to maintain shape and density.
-
Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed.
-
Can be hard-pruned in late winter if rejuvenation is required.
-
-
Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm mulch layer in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the base of the plant.
-
Pest and Disease Resistance: Resistant to most pests and diseases, though occasional scale insects or leaf spot can occur—treat promptly if necessary.
-
Winter Care: Evergreen and fully hardy; withstands frost, wind, and salt spray.
-
Weed Control: Keep the base free from weeds to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.
Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses
-
Foliage: Striking evergreen leaves with bright golden-yellow centres and dark green edges, providing year-round colour.
-
Flowers: Small, creamy-white, and highly fragrant flowers appear in autumn, adding seasonal interest.
-
Berries: Orange-red berries may develop after flowering, attracting birds and wildlife.
-
Form: Dense, bushy habit, ideal for creating privacy and shelter.
-
Growth Rate and Size: Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 2–3 metres in height and spread if left unpruned.
-
Wildlife Benefits: Flowers attract pollinators; berries feed birds in winter.
-
Ornamental Value: Perfect for adding structure, colour, and interest in all seasons.
-
Garden Design Uses:

Evergreen hedging for privacy.
