About Erigeron karvinskianus

Erigeron karvinskianus, commonly known as Mexican Fleabane, is a charming, long-flowering perennial that produces thousands of small daisy-like flowers from late spring until the first frosts. The delicate blooms open white before gradually ageing to soft pink, creating a beautiful two-tone effect as new and mature flowers appear together.

Growing to approximately 20–30cm tall with a spreading habit of 40–60cm, this versatile perennial naturally spills over walls, softens the edges of paving, fills gaps between stones and forms an attractive ground cover. Its airy growth habit and continuous flowering make it one of the most popular perennials for cottage gardens and informal planting. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects throughout the season.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun for the best flowering display.
• Will tolerate light partial shade, although flowering may be reduced.
• Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil.
• Thrives in sandy, loamy and chalky soils.
• Improve heavy clay soils by incorporating horticultural grit and organic matter.
• Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
• Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
• Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
• Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
• Apply a light mulch of gravel or organic matter around the plant while keeping the crown clear.
• Space plants approximately 35–45cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Erigeron karvinskianus is exceptionally easy to grow and requires very little attention.

• Water regularly during the first growing season.
• Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.
• Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during winter.
• Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
• Avoid excessive feeding, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
• Remove weeds regularly while plants establish.
• Water container-grown plants when the compost begins to dry.
• Divide mature plants every 3–4 years if they become overcrowded.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

• Deadhead faded flowers if desired to encourage even more blooms.
• Lightly trim the plant after the main flush of flowering to encourage fresh growth.
• Remove damaged or dead stems throughout the growing season.
• Cut back untidy growth in late winter or early spring.
• Trim lightly if plants spread beyond their desired space.

• Self-seeding may occur in favourable conditions, although unwanted seedlings are easy to remove.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
