    Description

    Planting Erigeron ‘Sea Breeze’®

Erigeron ‘Sea Breeze’® is a compact, spreading perennial valued for its lavender-pink, daisy-like flowers and yellow centres. Its low evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage forms a neat mound, while the flowers appear from late spring through summer. This variety is particularly suitable for coastal gardens, gravel planting, border edges, rock gardens, walls and containers.

    • Choose an open position in full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth, plentiful flowers and sturdy stems.

    • Light partial shade is tolerated, but flowering may be reduced and the plant may become more open.

    • Select a site with good airflow. ‘Sea Breeze’ tolerates coastal exposure and salt-laden winds once established.

    • Plant in moderately fertile, sharply drained soil. It adapts to loam, chalk and sandy ground but dislikes heavy, permanently wet conditions.

    • Improve compacted or clay soil with horticultural grit and well-rotted organic matter before planting.

    • Water the plant thoroughly before removing it from its container.

    • Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and approximately the same depth.

    • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil. Planting too deeply can trap moisture around the stems and encourage rot.

    • Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously to settle the roots.

    • Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart, allowing them to spread without becoming overcrowded.

    • For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost mixed with grit and select a frost-resistant pot with drainage holes.

    Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Erigeron ‘Sea Breeze’® becomes reasonably drought tolerant after establishment. Young and container-grown plants still require regular watering, particularly during warm or windy conditions.

    • Water consistently throughout the first growing season. Apply water deeply at the base to encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.

    • Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid maintaining constantly wet ground.

    • Continue watering established plants during prolonged drought, especially while flower buds are forming.

    • Check container-grown specimens frequently because pots can dry quickly in sunny or coastal locations.

    • Water containers thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the base. Empty saucers and decorative outer pots promptly.

    • Reduce watering during autumn and winter. Cold, saturated compost can damage the roots and crown.

    • Apply a balanced, slow-release perennial fertiliser in spring if the soil is poor or growth appears weak.

    • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft foliage and fewer flowers.

    • Container plants may receive a diluted liquid feed every four to six weeks during spring and summer.

    • Use gravel as a surface mulch to keep the crown dry, conserve some moisture and complement the plant’s coastal character.

    • Protect container plants during prolonged severe frost by insulating the pot and moving it into a sheltered outdoor position.

    Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

Regular deadheading helps extend the flowering period and keeps ‘Sea Breeze’® compact. Occasional trimming prevents the centre from becoming untidy or woody.

    • Remove faded flowers by cutting their stems back to healthy foliage or a developing side bud.

    • Deadhead throughout summer to encourage further flowers and prevent unnecessary seed production.

    • After the main flowering period, trim the entire plant lightly to restore its rounded outline and promote fresh growth.

    • Avoid cutting deeply into old, bare stems unless healthy buds are clearly visible lower down.

    • Remove dead, damaged, diseased or frost-blackened growth in spring as new shoots begin to appear.

    • Leave healthy evergreen foliage in place during winter because it continues to provide colour and protection for the crown.

    • Divide mature, congested clumps in spring if flowering declines or the centre becomes sparse.

    • Lift the plant carefully, separate healthy outer sections and replant them immediately at their original depth.

    • Inspect young growth for aphids and check around the crown for slugs and snails.

    • Watch for powdery mildew or fungal leaf spots during humid weather. Maintain airflow and avoid repeatedly wetting the foliage.

    • Remove heavily affected leaves and clear fallen debris from around the plant.

    • Repot container-grown specimens when their roots become crowded, using fresh free-draining compost and a slightly larger pot.

    • Cut flower stems can be used in small indoor arrangements. Harvest them when the blooms have opened fully.

    • With full sun, sharp drainage, moderate watering and regular deadheading, Erigeron ‘Sea Breeze’® will provide a long-lasting display of colourful flowers and dependable low-growing structure
