Overview and Features

Escallonia 'Iveyi' is a large, semi-evergreen to evergreen shrub prized for its lustrous, dark green foliage and profuse clusters of pure white flowers that bloom from early summer through early autumn. This variety is particularly valued for its neat, upright habit and ability to thrive in exposed, coastal, or difficult garden conditions.

Named after the gardener David Ivey of Caerhays Castle in Cornwall, 'Iveyi' is a hybrid of Escallonia montevidensis and Escallonia bifida. It is excellent for hedging, screening, or as a specimen shrub, bringing both structure and a long flowering season to gardens.

Escallonia 'Iveyi' is a versatile shrub that performs well in a variety of soil types and locations, as long as drainage is adequate.

• Light Requirements:

  • Thrives in full sun for best flowering and dense foliage

  • Tolerates light shade, though flowering may be reduced

• Soil Preferences:

  • Prefers moist, well-drained soil

  • Adaptable to alkaline or acidic soils, but avoids waterlogging

  • Performs well in coastal, sandy, or lightly stony soils

• Planting Tips:

  • Plant in spring or autumn for best establishment

  • Space plants 60–100 cm apart for hedging

  • Water well until established (first season)

Maintenance and Pruning

Escallonia 'Iveyi' is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from occasional pruning and feeding.

• Watering:

  • Keep evenly moist during dry spells, especially in the first year

  • Established plants are fairly drought-tolerant

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced shrub or hedge fertiliser in spring

  • Mulch annually with well-rotted compost or bark to retain moisture

• Pruning:

  • Lightly prune after flowering (late summer) to maintain shape

  • Hard prune in early spring if necessary to rejuvenate or reduce size

  • Can be trimmed into a formal hedge or left more natural

• Hardiness:

  • Hardy in most of the UK and Ireland (RHS H4), tolerating temperatures to around –10°C

  • In severe winters, may lose some leaves but generally recovers well

• Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally trouble-free

  • May occasionally suffer from escallonia leaf spot (fungal) in very wet or humid summers—improve airflow and remove affected leaves

• Toxicity:

  • Not known to be toxic to pets or humans

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
