Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to achieve the strongest growth and the most vibrant silvery-blue foliage colour.

• Soil Preferences: Thrives in well-drained soils, such as sandy loam or light clay; avoid poorly drained or waterlogged areas.

• pH Range: Grows well in slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0–7.5).

• Moisture Needs: Requires regular moisture while establishing but is drought-tolerant once mature.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring after frost risk has passed or in early autumn in mild regions.

• Spacing: If planting in open ground, allow 3–5 metres around the tree to accommodate its natural spread.

• Positioning Tips: Ideal as a specimen tree, for architectural impact, or as a cut-foliage plant.

• Shelter Needs: Hardy in most regions but benefits from shelter from severe winter winds when young.

• Container Growing: Suitable for large pots with free-draining compost; prune annually to control size and encourage fresh foliage.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Keep soil consistently moist during the first year.

  • Mature plants require only occasional watering in prolonged dry periods.

  • Container-grown plants need regular watering in summer but should not sit in waterlogged compost.

• Feeding: Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote strong growth and lush foliage.

• Pruning:

  • For decorative juvenile foliage, cut back hard (“coppicing”) in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh shoots.

  • If growing as a tall tree, prune lightly to remove damaged, crossing, or excess branches while maintaining structure.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm mulch layer of compost, bark, or leaf mould in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the trunk.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Highly resilient and rarely troubled by pests or diseases; ensure good drainage to prevent root problems.

• Winter Care: Hardy down to around -10°C; protect very young plants with fleece in severe frost, especially in exposed areas.

• Weed Control: Keep the area around the base weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water.

Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses

• Foliage: Striking round juvenile leaves in a glaucous silvery-blue shade, maturing to elongated grey-green leaves; foliage has a pleasant aromatic scent.

• Flowers: Small creamy-white blooms may appear in summer on older plants, though less common if regularly coppiced for foliage.

• Form: Graceful upright growth with smooth bark that peels attractively to reveal cream, grey, and brown patches.

• Growth Rate and Size: Fast-growing; can reach 6–10 metres in height and 3–5 metres spread in open ground if unpruned.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
