Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Best grown in full sun, which encourages strong growth and enhances the silver-blue colour of the foliage.

• Soil Preferences: Thrives in moist but well-drained soils, such as sandy loam or light clay. Avoid heavy, waterlogged sites.

• pH Range: Performs well in slightly acidic to neutral conditions (pH 6.0–7.5).

• Moisture Needs: Requires regular moisture during the first year to establish, then becomes drought-tolerant.

• Planting Time: Plant in spring after frost risk has passed, or in early autumn in mild regions.

• Spacing: Allow 4–6 metres around the planting site for a mature tree if grown in open ground.

• Positioning Tips: Excellent as a specimen tree, for cut foliage production, or as an architectural focal point.

• Shelter Needs: Hardy in most UK and Irish gardens, but young plants benefit from shelter from harsh winter winds.

• Container Growing: Suitable for large pots with free-draining compost; prune regularly to maintain manageable size.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water regularly through the first growing season.

  • Mature plants need watering only during extended dry spells.

  • Container plants require consistent summer watering but must not stand in waterlogged soil.

• Feeding: Use a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer in spring to encourage lush growth.

• Pruning:

  • For foliage production or compact growth, cut back hard (“coppice”) in late winter or early spring to encourage new juvenile shoots.

  • For a taller tree, prune lightly to shape and remove damaged or crossing branches.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm mulch layer in spring to help retain soil moisture and reduce weed competition. Keep mulch away from the base of the trunk.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Very resilient, with few pest or disease issues; good air circulation helps maintain healthy growth.

• Winter Care: Hardy down to about -10°C; protect very young plants in exposed sites during severe cold spells.

• Weed Control: Keep the root zone free from weeds and grass to reduce competition for nutrients and water.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
