Description and Characteristics

Euonymus japonicus 'Himalaya' is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its glossy, variegated foliage and year-round structure. A cultivar of the Japanese Spindle (Euonymus japonicus), ‘Himalaya’ features dense, leathery green leaves edged in creamy white, giving it a clean and elegant appearance. It provides reliable colour throughout the year and works well in both formal and informal gardens.

This variety is naturally bushy and upright, typically reaching 1–1.5 metres in height and up to 1 metre wide. It responds well to clipping and is suitable for low hedging, containers, topiary, or specimen planting. Its foliage is small and neat, making it particularly useful in small gardens, patios, or as a contrast in mixed borders.

Although it produces small greenish-white flowers in late spring or early summer, they are not showy and are generally considered secondary to the foliage.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Euonymus japonicus 'Himalaya' is tough and versatile, tolerating a wide range of conditions, including urban pollution, coastal winds, and light pruning. It’s low-maintenance and suitable for beginner gardeners.

• Light Requirements:

  • Grows well in full sun to partial shade

  • Leaf colour is often most vivid in full sun, but tolerates shade well

  • Avoid full deep shade, where variegation may fade

• Soil Preferences:

  • Thrives in well-drained soil of almost any type: clay, loam, sand, or chalk

  • Tolerates a wide pH range, from acidic to alkaline

  • Avoid very wet or waterlogged ground

• Watering Needs:

  • Water regularly during the first season to help establish roots

  • Once established, is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering

  • Container-grown plants may need more frequent watering

• Feeding:

  • Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring to encourage dense growth

  • Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to maintain soil health

• Pruning and Shaping:

  • Responds well to clipping and shaping—can be pruned into topiary balls or hedges

  • Best pruned in late spring or early summer, with light trims as needed

  • Remove any reverted green shoots that may appear to preserve variegation

• Winter Care:

  • Hardy in Zones 6–9 (RHS H5–H6) – tolerant of temperatures down to -15°C

  • May benefit from shelter from cold, drying winds in very exposed sites

  • Leaves remain attractive throughout winter

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
