Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae – Planting & Care Guide
About Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae
Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae, commonly known as Mrs Robb’s Bonnet or Wood Spurge, is a tough, evergreen perennial valued for its glossy dark green foliage and distinctive lime-green spring flowers.
It is particularly useful because it performs well in dry, shady areas, including beneath established trees and shrubs where many other plants struggle. Over time, it spreads by underground runners to form attractive evergreen colonies, making it an excellent ground-cover plant.
The fresh lime-green flower bracts contrast beautifully with the darker foliage and combine particularly well with spring bulbs, Ferns, Hellebores and other woodland-style plants.
Planting Guide
- Plant in partial shade or shade.
- It will tolerate some sun where the soil does not become excessively dry.
- Suitable for a wide range of reasonably well-drained soils.
- Particularly useful for dry shade once established.
- Dig a planting hole slightly wider than the root ball.
- Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- Water regularly during the first growing season while plants establish.
Allow sufficient room for the plant to spread, particularly when using it as permanent ground cover.
Care & Maintenance
This is an exceptionally low-maintenance perennial once established.
- Water young plants during prolonged dry periods.
- Established plants generally tolerate dry conditions well.
- Apply a mulch of organic matter in spring if required.
- Feeding is rarely necessary in reasonably fertile garden soil.
- Remove damaged or untidy foliage when needed.
- Control spreading shoots if the plant begins moving beyond its intended area.
Pruning
After flowering, old flowering stems can be removed to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
Always wear gloves when pruning Euphorbia. The stems contain a milky white sap that can irritate the skin and eyes.
- Cut old flowered stems back towards the base.
- Remove damaged foliage in spring.
- Control unwanted spreading growth when necessary.
- Avoid allowing the sap to contact skin or eyes.
- Wash hands and tools after pruning.

Ground Cover & Dry Shade
One of the main advantages of Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae is its ability to establish in difficult dry shade.
Once established, underground runners allow it to gradually spread and create a dense carpet of foliage. This can help suppress weeds and cover bare ground beneath established trees.
Because it can spread enthusiastically in favourable conditions, it is best planted where its natural ground-covering habit is an advantage. Remove unwanted runners if a more restricted clump is required.
Seasonal Interest
Winter: Evergreen foliage provides valuable structure and colour.
Spring: Bright lime-green flower bracts emerge above the dark leaves, creating the plant’s main display.
Early Summer: Flowering can continue before older stems begin to fade.
Summer to Autumn: Dense evergreen foliage continues providing attractive ground cover.
Common Problems
- Generally very resistant to pests and diseases.
- Poorly drained, permanently wet ground can cause root problems.
- Plants can spread beyond their intended area if left unchecked.
- Older stems may become untidy and benefit from removal after flowering.
- Milky sap is an irritant and should not come into contact with skin or eyes.
- Gloves are strongly recommended whenever cutting or handling damaged stems.
With its glossy evergreen foliage, striking lime-green spring flowers and exceptional tolerance of dry shade, Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae is an excellent problem-solving perennial. Particularly valuable beneath trees and shrubs, it provides reliable, low-maintenance evergreen ground cover for shady areas of Irish gardens.
