Planting & Positioning
-
Ficus carica ‘Twotimer® Gustis®’ is a compact, deciduous fig variety bred to produce two crops in a season under good conditions.
-
Ideal for sunny gardens, patios, or large containers.
-
Choose a warm, sheltered position in full sun for the best fruit production.
-
A south- or west-facing wall is particularly beneficial, as reflected heat encourages ripening.
-
Plant in well-drained soil, as figs dislike waterlogged conditions.
-
If planting in the ground, dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
-
Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.
-
Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly after planting.
-
For container growing, use a large pot with good drainage holes and a loam-based compost.
-
Restricting root growth slightly can help encourage better fruiting.
This variety is well suited to Irish and UK gardens when given adequate warmth and shelter.
Watering, Feeding & Fruiting
-
Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish strong roots.
-
Once established, figs are moderately drought tolerant but benefit from consistent moisture while fruit is forming.
-
Avoid overwatering, especially in poorly drained soil.
-
Container-grown plants will require more frequent watering during warm weather.
-
Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support new growth.
-
Once fruits begin to form, switch to a high-potash feed every 2–3 weeks to encourage ripening.
-
‘Twotimer® Gustis®’ can produce an early crop (breba) on last year’s wood and a second crop on new growth in late summer.
-
Remove very small, undeveloped fruits in late autumn, leaving pea-sized fruits that may overwinter for the following year.
-
Harvest figs when they feel soft, droop slightly on the stem, and are fully coloured.
Fruit quality improves in long, warm summers. In cooler seasons, the main late crop may be more reliable than the second flush.
Pruning, Maintenance & Winter Care
-
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring before growth resumes.
-
Remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches to maintain an open shape.
-
Avoid heavy pruning, as this may reduce fruiting potential.
-
In early summer, pinch back new shoots after five or six leaves to encourage fruit development.
-
Protect young plants from severe frost, especially during their first few winters.
-
In colder areas, wrap the plant with horticultural fleece during prolonged freezing conditions.
-
Container plants can be moved to a sheltered, frost-free position in winter if required.
-
Repot container-grown figs every 2–3 years in spring, refreshing compost and trimming roots lightly if necessary.
-
Check regularly for pests such as aphids or scale insects and treat promptly if needed.
With a warm, sunny position and careful feeding, Ficus carica ‘Twotimer® Gustis®’ will reward you with attractive foliage and delicious, sweet figs, making it both ornamental and productive in the garden
